Congratulations to The Gambia 🇬🇲 Chefs
The Gambia has claimed victory in the fiercely contested Jollof rice category at this year’s West Africa Food Festival (WAFFEST), held in Accra, Ghana — reigniting the region’s long-standing culinary rivalry.

Chefs Haddy Nyang and Momodou Alpha Jallow won gold in the West African Countries Heritage Jollof competition, often dubbed the “Jollof Rice War.”

The Gambia also secured top honours in the Meatless Monday Vegan and Bread Bake contests, with Chef Malang Kebbeh and Chef Emmanuel Mendy earning gold and silver medals respectively.

Chef Momodou Alpha Jallow was awarded bronze in the ACA/WAFFEST Chef of the Year category.

The Gambia Chef Association, led by Chef Musa Darboe, participated with support from the Gambia Tourism Board and the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture.

WAFFEST, held from 22–27 September, featured chefs from over 20 African countries showcasing regional cuisine. Gambia’s win has sparked celebration across social media and renewed debate over who truly makes the best Jollof rice.

On Friday, 12 September, WAVE Gambia convened a Women’s Support Group meeting that brought together victims and survivors for a deeply meaningful session focused on mental health and psychosocial support (MHPSS). While many participants recalled the painful experiences of their victimhood, the session also fostered healing and resilience. Following an overview provided by WAVE on recent developments in the transitional justice process—including key issues such as the ban from public office—participants collectively called on the government to expedite various post-TRRC processes, urging increased commitment, transparency, and accountability in the implementation of the TRRC White Paper. The meeting further highlighted the need for enhanced communication channels between victims and other stakeholders to ensure their voices remain central to national reconciliation efforts.

This meeting was one of the activities implemented as part of WAVE-Gambia’s project funded by the National Endowment for Democracy (NED), aimed at empowering survivors to effectively use available frameworks to advance accountability and ensure sustained advocacy for justice and reparations
