NAWEC: IF A BROKEN SYSTEM WAS INHERITED, I WONDER IF WHAT WE HAVE NOW IS NOT COMPARING A "PAST BAD COMET WITH A WORSE PRESENT OMEN"?

NAWEC was inherited by the current regime in 2016 now we are in 2026. Nothing new is nothing good. Former President Yahya Jammeh made sure that Kotu was transformed into what he left behind in 2016. What has changed within the context of reassurance and deliverables? So much is still left to be desired! A fact Gambians and non Gambians in The Gambia cannot deny! It might not have been the best during Jammeh's time but is indeed better than now.
In retrospect lets recall when Sir Dawda Kairaba Jawara shifted the gears from 1964 to 1977, the year when all machines in Banjul blew off! He did not tell Gambians that it was beyond him! He kept on steering the ship and made sure electricity remained stable. During former Yahya Jammeh's time the Taiwanese government through the Executive Yuan and TAITECH did its best to help reassure Gambians. Ultimately good machines were installed at Kotu! Who can deny that? No one! Jammeh at least left more stable machines at Kotu and Brikama than what we have today! It was also during Jammeh's era that cash power was introduced. INSN'T IT? YES INDEED!
Yahya Jammeh DID NOT combine the grids of KARPOWER, SENELEC, ECOWAS and OMVG altogether around him yet power supply was far better when compared to now.
Jammeh did NOT innaugurate the OMVG relay stations amidst fanfare, singing and dancing.
In 2017 I traveled to Dakar Senegal to attend an international conference at King Fahad Hotel Dakar. The theme was "digital trust in Africa" organized by Secuity Day in collaboration with the French ministry of foreign affairs. For ease of reference go on you tube and type my Essa Bokarr Sey then add Dakar on the search bar my speech will pop up. I proceeded to the Gambia from April to May the same year and stayed for 5 weeks then flew back to the USA. During my stay power supply was neither erratic nor as bad as it is today. Well lets be honest, fair and impartial here. That was just 2 to 3 months after Jammeh left! How come we are hearing about inheritance of a broken system today?
How about our journalists conduct a survey by doing what is known as "Micro Trottoir" in French "Corridor Mic" then ask customers and consumers if their past experiences under Jammeh can be compared to what obtains within their households as we speak? That is to say power outages at home, in the offices and streets! Mark you those lights on the OIC Rd to the airport are solar generated not by NAWEC!
Sense asks this! Which is which? On one hand, we hear excuses like the war in Iran is the cause of these ongoing outages? Isn't it? On the other hand or all of a sudden we are now being told stories about inheritance of a broken system? Pulling wires to the rural areas when the capacity of the main machines cannot handle it is POLITICISING ELECTRICITY NOT WHAT CRITICS ARE SAYING.
Rural electrification is of course being POLITICISED by the sitting regime when urban electrification is alongside being PARALYZED! THATS THE FACT NOT THE CONTRARY.
Please lets not hand over the same darkness to the next generation!
WOW!

Ambassador Essa Bokarr Sey.

RESPONSE BY OMAR P. JALLOW TO DEPUTY SPEAKER SEEDY NJIE'S STATEMENT ON THE LEAKED AUDIO RECORDING

I have taken note of the statement issued by Deputy Speaker Seedy Njie regarding the leaked audio recording in which he made deeply troubling remarks about the Mandinka community. While he attempted to portray himself as a victim of misinterpretation, his own statement and apology reveal a different reality.

First and foremost, it is important to note that Mr. Njie was unable to deny the authenticity of any part of the audio recording. His admission and subsequent apology are clear acknowledgements that the statements attributed to him were indeed made. Therefore, his claim that public concerns and accusations of tribalism are without basis is simply not true. Gambians have heard the recording for themselves and are capable of drawing their own conclusions.

What stands out most in Mr. Njie's statement is his apparent concern about the potential political consequences of his remarks, particularly how they may be perceived by President Adama Barrow and what impact they could have on his position and personal interests. Rather than demonstrating genuine remorse for the offence caused to thousands of Gambians, his statement appears primarily focused on damage control and self-preservation.

Despite acknowledging the warm reception accorded to him and his delegation during their visit to Sare Gainako, Mr. Njie shamelessly chose to victimise me—one of the very individuals who contributed to that hospitality. This conduct is not only disappointing but also speaks to a pattern that many people have privately raised with me over the years.

My experience is not unique. Following the threats made against me by Adama Njie, numerous people from Nianija reached out to express their apologies and solidarity. Many also shared concerns regarding what they described as Seedy Njie's divisive approach to politics and his tendency to victimise individuals who hold views different from his own. According to them, several people have suffered similar treatment over the years.

Mr. Njie also stated that he intervened with the Director General of GRTS to ensure that I was not dismissed from my position. However, he failed to explain to Gambians on what legitimate grounds I could have been dismissed in the first place. Such a statement raises more questions than answers and suggests the existence of undue influence that should concern every citizen who values fairness and professionalism.

Furthermore, Mr. Njie's assertion that he left Sare Gainako happy is difficult to reconcile with the facts. He departed the village without informing anyone, including myself, simply because the Kanifing Municipal Council Mayor Talib Ahmed Bensouda was invited to the event. This behaviour hardly reflects the conduct of someone who was genuinely pleased with the occasion.

Mr. Njie describes himself as a unifier and a peacemaker rather than a tribalist. I will leave that judgement to the Gambian people. The audio recording is in the public domain, and every citizen has the opportunity to listen to his own words and assess whether they reflect unity, tolerance, and national cohesion.

I have confidence in the wisdom and intelligence of the Gambian people. No public official should assume that citizens cannot distinguish between sincere leadership and political convenience.
I therefore call upon President Adama Barrow and the relevant authorities to take appropriate disciplinary action regarding this matter before divisive rhetoric causes further damage to our national unity and social cohesion.

As for me, I remain firmly committed to the ideals of peace, national unity, justice, and equal respect for all Gambians regardless of ethnicity, region, religion, or political affiliation.

BARROW SETS THE PRECEDENT AND THE REST MUST FOLLOW

All these corruption scandals in the Barrow's government is a strong betrayal of the oath of office and Barrow has undermined his social contract by transforming public trust into an instrument for private gains. Today, almost all senior government officials held the strong beliefs that they must be rich before Barrow gets down or else regrets living the rest of their lives in poverty.

Combating executive corruption is a long-term endeavor that relies on building robust, transparent system. We woke up to the case of former CDS Cham and 1000s scandals are in play in this government.

We have our contract with Barrow and not anyone else, so all these corruption scandals are to be put on Barrow's head. Barrow has entertained corrupt practice from the get-go and has completely lost the moral ground to stop it now.

Barrow has been compromised at the beginning of his presidency and they are all kings in their small kingdoms exploiting the Gambian people.

We are the victims of this government because their agenda is to steal from us as much as possible. Barrow was given two terms by The Gambians to Concentrate on our job but the reality on the ground is they are really serving themselves and not the masses.

To you who are thinking of giving Barrow another mandate, you really need to reflect on the lives you have been living for the past 10 years. These people keep on stealing from you on a broad day light and go to bed peacefully without remorse.

All sectors are dying and the competition among them is who steals more rather than who deliver a better service to us.

Barrow's 10 years has been a punishment to the Gambians and we have the opportunity to take back our country and in no circumstances must we miss this opportunity on December 5th.

Banjul, 25th May 2026

The Gambia Immigration Department (GID) wishes to confirm media reports regarding three immigration officers who absconded in Italy during a two-week training program on migration management, border security, and document examination at the Italian Police Training Academy in Nettuno, Rome.

The training program was part of a bilateral cooperation framework between the Government of Italy, through its Ministry of Interior, and the GID. It was attended by twenty Gambian officers as part of ongoing efforts to enhance capacity development, expertise, and exposure in border management and document security.

Prior to the completion of the training, three immigration officers—namely, Assistant Immigration Control Officers Basirou L. Bojang, Lamin Drammeh, and Bambi Jah— who were nominated among outstanding performers of the Border Patrol Unit training program, absconded from their residence in a manner that indicates a premeditated and planned action.

Regrettably, the actions of these officers do not, by any means, represent the values, interests, or expectations of the Department. Their conduct compromises the integrity of The Gambia, strains diplomatic cooperation between The Gambia and Italy, and risks portraying a negative perception of our officers’ professionalism and loyalty. The leadership of the GID condemns these actions in the strongest possible terms.

Accordingly, the GID has taken swift administrative and disciplinary actions by notifying Italian and European authorities of this breach, while requesting the immediate tracing and removal of these individuals through coordinated channels. All relevant information, including passport bio-data, visas, and photographs, has been shared with the appropriate authorities for immediate action.

The GID assures all partners, stakeholders, and Gambians at large that the Department will continue to pursue all available means to repatriate these officers and enforce stringent disciplinary measures. The GID frowns upon any action that stains the integrity of the nation. We remain firmly committed to maintaining discipline, upholding professional conduct, and strengthening international partnerships and cooperation.
