Residents of Basse are demanding change as their needs are being ignored. The people in Basse, which is also the hometown of President Adama Barrow, are facing serious problems due to neglect. They are asking local leaders to take responsibility and focus on the community’s urgent needs instead of their own interests.
Basse has been severely affected by floods, poor roads, and unreliable electricity. Reports show that many homes are damaged every rainy season, forcing people to leave their homes. A survey found that 80% of residents feel that their leaders have not kept their promises to improve the situation. Fatou, a local teacher, said, "Every year, we face the same problems. We need leaders who will listen and act, not just during elections." Malick, a father of three, added, "Our children deserve a better future without these ongoing struggles."
This neglect highlights a significant gap between Basse’s leaders and the people they are supposed to help. Many leaders appear to be more interested in getting votes and enjoying their positions than in solving the problems in their community. This lack of attention to infrastructure and safety not only exacerbates the issue of floods but also limits job opportunities for residents. As people come together in town meetings to speak out, they are demanding that their leaders be honest and invest in the future of Basse. This is a sign that more Gambians are realizing the importance of holding their leaders accountable.
Now is the time for action. We must come together to demand the changes we need to create a better future for Gambia.
