Senegal Bakers Stage 48-Hour Strike Over Soaring Costs

The Senegalese Bakers’ Association (Regroupement des Boulangers du Sénégal, RUBS) has launched a 48-hour nationwide strike, beginning October 6th through 7th, halting bread production and sales across the country.

According to reports cited by Fatu Network (via Wal Fadjri), the bakers say the sharp rise in the prices of flour, sugar, fuel, and electricity has left them operating at a loss. Many bakeries, they noted, have already been forced to shut down.

Speaking on behalf of the union, RUBS Secretary Amadou Lamine Ndiaye accused the Senegalese government of reneging on its promise to reduce flour prices by 3,000 CFA francs. He further raised concerns about unfair competition from informal operators, which he said has worsened the crisis.

Negotiations with the Agriculture Minister, Serigne Guèye Diop, have reportedly collapsed, prompting RUBS to describe the strike as a “signal of alarm” aimed at pressuring the government to act swiftly.

This development closely mirrors recent bread crises in The Gambia, where bakers earlier this year faced similar cost pressures. The standoff in Banjul eventually led the authorities to approve a rise in the standard loaf price from 10 to 12 dalasis.

The Senegalese bakers’ strike has now highlighted the regional nature of food security and pricing challenges, underscoring how global inflation and rising production costs are affecting basic commodities in West Africa.

MoBSE Warns Schools Against Withholding GABECE Results Over Fees

The Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education (MoBSE) has issued a strong warning to school authorities against withholding the results of Grade 9 students who sat for the Gambia Basic Education Certificate Examination (GABECE) due to unpaid study fees.

In a press release cited by Fatu Network, the Ministry described the practice as “entirely unacceptable” and directed all schools to release student results without delay. It further cautioned that any principal or head of school who fails to comply with the directive will face disciplinary action.

The statement also reaffirmed that the government’s “no levy policy” remains in force for students transitioning into Grade 10. This means that parents must not be compelled to:
• Pay unauthorized fees.
• Buy uniforms or stationery from specific or designated vendors.

The Ministry urged School Management Committees (SMCs) to be vigilant and report any violations of these directives. It stressed that it will take “swift and decisive action” against any offenders to ensure compliance with national education policies.

This move reflects MoBSE’s continued commitment to upholding access to education, easing the financial burden on parents, and protecting students from unfair practices.

President Barrow Commissions New Serrekunda Mosque and Mortuary

His Excellency President Adama Barrow this afternoon officially commissioned the newly reconstructed Masjid Sayerr Jobe, the Serrekunda Central Mosque, together with a new mortuary facility at the heart of the bustling city of Serrekunda.

The commissioning marks a significant milestone in the President’s efforts to support the country’s religious communities and provide improved facilities for worship and public service.

According to the State House press release, the reconstruction of the mosque complex was funded by President Barrow and donor partners. This initiative forms part of the government’s broader commitment to:
• Promote religious tolerance across The Gambia.
• Address the longstanding problem of inadequate space and facilities at the Serrekunda Central Mosque, which serves thousands of worshippers daily.
• Provide dignified community services, particularly through the establishment of a new mortuary to meet the needs of the growing urban population.

The Serrekunda Central Mosque, one of the most important places of worship in The Gambia, now stands renovated and modernized to accommodate the city’s large Muslim population. President Barrow’s intervention reflects his continued dedication to strengthening social cohesion, supporting religious institutions, and enhancing community infrastructure.

Reinforcement Team from PIU Arrives in Lamin as Protests Escalate

A reinforcement team from the Police Intervention Unit (PIU) has been deployed to Lamin following the resurgence of protests in the area. Earlier in the day, security personnel managed to clear the streets, dispersing demonstrators who had gathered in large numbers. However, tensions quickly reignited as protesters regrouped and marched back, this time occupying the main entrance to Mandinary.

The renewed demonstration has disrupted movement in and out of the community, creating concern among residents and commuters. Security officers are attempting to maintain order, but the situation remains tense as both sides stand firm. The presence of additional PIU officers underscores the seriousness of the unrest and the authorities’ determination to prevent further escalation.
