Foreign Truck Smashes Community Bridge in Nioro Jattaba

A Senegalese truck with license plates AA627QN (front) and AA895TH (rear) veered off the South Bank Highway in Nioro Jattaba on Monday, damaging a vital community bridge.

No casualties were reported, though the accident occurred amid heavy rain. The matter was reported to the police in neighbouring Sankandi village.

The driver, Biran Jow, said his brakes failed and he swerved to avoid a serious accident. "I managed to avoid hitting people nearby, but the truck ended up in a gully and struck the bridge," he explained.

Eyewitnesses confirmed the truck narrowly missed some people close to the bridge before crashing into it.

Residents expressed deep concern over the damage, noting the bridge was built entirely through community contributions after years of hard work. It serves as a crucial link between two parts of the village and is the main passage for schoolchildren, spanning a dangerous gully prone to erosion.

Nioro Jattaba Islamic School Celebrates Success Amid Infrastructural Challenges

In a remarkable show of resilience and commitment to education, more than 200 students of the Nioro Jattaba Islamic Education Centre have continued their learning journey under makeshift shelters after outgrowing the available classrooms at the neighbouring primary school.

Since 2023, the school has operated in shifts, alternating between the primary school and open-air thatched classrooms to accommodate the growing number of pupils. Despite these limitations, the centre has recorded significant success, graduating hundreds of students during its 2025 annual Qur’anic recitation ceremony, held on Saturday and Sunday, 28th and 29th June, in Nioro.

Parents and community members have hailed the achievements of the school, citing the growing interest in structured Islamic education as a significant development. "We never thought our children would memorise the Qur’an and gain Islamic knowledge at this level," said one proud parent during the graduation ceremony. "This daara is changing lives.”

In response to the increasing demand, the community launched a self-funded project to construct a three-classroom block dedicated to Qur’anic education. The initiative, which aims to replace the traditional home-based group teachings, is being built gradually through local fundraising and volunteer labour.

Alhagie Bah, Head of the Qur’anic teaching administration, explained the challenges they face. “This project is entirely community-driven. Whenever we raise a small amount, we invest it in materials and volunteer work. Then we start the next round of fundraising.”

Although the structure has reached its full length, it remains roofless. With the rainy season just beginning, Mr Bah fears that operations may have to be suspended. “We are worried we will have to shut down the daara again because of the rain. Without a roof, we can’t continue classes safely,” he added.

Nioro Delivers Ramadan Sugar Distribution Project

The community of Nioro Jattaba village has successfully delivered its annual Ramadan Sugar Distribution Project, a charitable initiative aimed at supporting households during the holy month of fasting.

The project, which was formalised in 2019, was designed to consolidate individual efforts into a coordinated and inclusive community-driven exercise. Since its inception, the initiative has grown significantly, with this year’s distribution reaching more households than ever before.
What initially began as a modest gesture, distributing one 50kg bag of sugar among four households, has now improved to the level where two households or fewer share a single bag.

This year’s distribution was coordinated under the leadership of Mr Sheriff Bah who described the project as a meaningful expression of collective charity. He noted that the impressive level of participation reflects the community’s spiritual devotion and desire to earn divine rewards during the month of Ramadan.

One of the lead project coordinators, Mr Modika Sowe, reflected on the progress made since the project’s early days. “It was not an easy take-off at the beginning,” he noted, “but thanks to ongoing advocacy and a transparent approach to fund management and project implementation, the initiative has gained increasing support year after year.” He also revealed that plans are now being considered to expand the scope of the project to provide more comprehensive support for households during Ramadan.

Speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, Mr Musa Sowe commended the Nioro Jattaba community for its unity and the spirit of generosity demonstrated through this initiative. He praised the youth, in particular, for driving the project forward, and highlighted the importance of self-help and shared responsibility. “The same humanity and sense of reward that international donors seek in helping others,” he said, “is what our own people have embraced and demonstrated through this successful Ramadan package.”

About Ramadan (in brief)

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, observed by Muslims worldwide as a month of fasting, prayer, reflection, and community
The month of Ramadan is a time of heightened spiritual reflection, charity, and compassion. The Qur'an states, "Those who spend their wealth [in charity] by night and day, in secret and in public – they will have their reward with their Lord" (Surah Al-Baqarah: 274).

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) also said: “Whoever gives iftar to one who is fasting will have a reward like theirs, without that detracting from their reward in the slightest” (Hadith – Tirmidhi).

Supporting others during Ramadan is among the most virtuous deeds, and such initiatives not only ease hardship but also strengthen bonds within the community.
