The story of illegal migration in The Gambia is often told through the lens of those who leave, but what about the economy they leave behind?

Recent findings by our researcher, Yaya, reveal a troubling trend. In villages like Memmeh, the tools of production are being sold to fund "Back Way" journeys, leaving the elderly to manage a shrinking agricultural sector. We are witnessing a shift where money flows in, but the hands needed to build a sustainable future are being lost to the Sahara and the sea.

We see the new buildings, but we also see the empty farms. In your community, which do you feel has a bigger impact: the money coming in or the people leaving?

Public debt isn’t just numbers on a spreadsheet.

It shows up in higher taxes, delayed projects, rising costs, and fewer opportunities for everyday Gambians.

When nearly 50% of national revenue goes to debt servicing, we have to ask the hard questions:
Is this borrowing building our future, or borrowing it away? Read Momodou Lamin Khan's explanation on public debt ➡ www.asamaha.com/public-debt-in-the-gambia-development-tool-or-dependency-trap

In this article, Dr. Fatoumata S. Sarjo explores the opportunities, risks, and the responsibility of both public and private sectors in shaping a fair healthcare system.

Hustle is not the problem in The Gambia.

Financial literacy is.

From tailors and fruit sellers to shop owners and freelancers, thousands of Gambians work hard every single day; yet, many businesses still fail, not because of laziness, but due to a lack of financial knowledge.

Financial literacy, including budgeting, record-keeping, saving, investing, and borrowing wisely, is one of the most powerful tools an entrepreneur can possess. And yet, it remains one of the least taught.

Read our writer Aisha Gitteh's analysis on financial literacy.
