The Ministry of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology (MoHERST) has announced the appointment of the pioneer leadership for the newly established University of Education, The Gambia (UEG).

Following a rigorous selection process by the UEG Governing Council, Professor Ahmed Adamu has been appointed as the University’s first Vice-Chancellor, while Professor Johnson Haniel Pongri takes up the role of Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic).

Professor Adamu, known for his expertise in university governance and research-driven development, will lead the institution’s vision of becoming a premier teacher training university. Supporting him, Professor Pongri brings extensive experience in academic administration and programme development.

MoHERST Minister, Professor Pierre Gomez, congratulated the appointees on behalf of the Ministry, noting his confidence that their leadership will drive UEG’s mission of producing quality educators and strengthening higher education in The Gambia.

The Gambia Appoints Dr. Samba Bah as Executive Director of the Student Revolving Loan Scheme

The Ministry of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology has appointed Dr. Samba Bah, a recent PhD graduate in Higher Education and Student Affairs from Ohio University, USA, as the new Executive Director of the Student Revolving Loan Scheme, effective 1st November 2025.

Dr. Bah, whose doctoral research focused on cost-sharing in higher education with a case study on University of The Gambia graduates, brings extensive expertise in education leadership, finance, and policy. He previously served as Speaker of the National Youth Parliament and has held leadership and advisory roles in both The Gambia and the United States.

Minister of Higher Education Professor Pierre Gomez welcomed the appointment, highlighting Dr. Bah’s experience and commitment to enhancing access to higher education. Dr. Bah expressed gratitude and pledged to ensure the effective implementation of the Student Revolving Loan Scheme Act, 2025, to expand opportunities for Gambian students.

The Scheme is a flagship programme of the Ministry aimed at supporting students with financial assistance for tertiary education.

The Department of Agriculture, with support from the ROOTS Project and the Ministry of Agriculture’s Communication Unit, has begun a field visit across The Gambia’s six agricultural regions. The mission aims to document Farmer Field Schools and their role in promoting innovative technologies such as rice intensification, composting, and climate-smart practices.

The initiative supports ROOTS’ goal of empowering farmers with hands-on skills and advancing sustainable, community-led agriculture.

Gambia Participates on Tuesday hosted a capacity-building workshop for civil society organizations (CSOs), community-based organizations (CBOs), and media personnel, aimed at strengthening communication and promoting inclusive, accountable, and participatory democracy in The Gambia.

Held at a local hotel, the training focused on enhancing collaboration between rural and urban CSOs and the media, with the goal of improving nationwide advocacy efforts and civic engagement.

The National Global Environment Facility (GEF) Secretariat, in collaboration with The Gambia’s National Environment Agency (NEA), on Tuesday convened an Expanded Constituency Workshop for West African countries, bringing together over 15 representatives from both Sahelian and coastal nations.

The high-level forum, held in The Gambia, aims to strengthen regional collaboration on environmental governance, share lessons learned from previous GEF programmes, and build capacity for more impactful interventions in addressing pressing environmental challenges across the subregion.

The Gambia Armed Forces (GAF) has officially launched its maiden Commissioning Course for 40 Officer Cadets at the GAF Training School in Fajara. The landmark program, anchored on Gambian doctrine and values, marks the first time future officers will be fully trained within the country.

Commandant Major Abdoulie Secka described it as a pivotal moment in GAF’s evolution, discipline, resilience, and leadership as core to the course. Speaking on behalf of the Chief of Defence Staff, Brig. Gen. Yaya Drammeh urged cadets to embrace lifelong learning and uphold military traditions.

The initiative, part of the CDS 2025 Training Directive, aims to reduce reliance on foreign training, strengthen institutional independence, and advance security sector reform.
