⚖️ Landmark ECOWAS Court Ruling on FGM 🚨

On July 8, 2025, the ECOWAS Court of Justice ruled that Sierra Leone’s failure to criminalise Female Ge***al Mutilation (FGM) is a violation of the rights of women and girls. 🙅🏽‍♀️✊🏾

The court declared FGM as “one of the worst forms of violence against women”, even meeting the threshold of torture when intentionally inflicted.

🗣️ Gambian activist Fatou Baldeh MBE hailed the decision as “a monumental step forward” in the fight to end FGM in West Africa.

📍This ruling also comes as The Gambia’s Supreme Court reviews a constitutional challenge to the country’s FGM ban — a decision that could be directly influenced by this ECOWAS precedent.

💬 “This is a clear message: human rights must come before harmful traditions,” Baldeh said.
