Gambia Launches Third Phase of Biometric Passport Mobile Enrollment

Banjul, The Gambia – 11th June 2026

The Gambia Immigration Department (GID) has announced that the third phase of the biometric passport mobile enrollment exercise will take place from 15th to 24th June 2026 across several regions of the country.

This phase will cover the West Coast Region, Lower River Region, Central River Region, Upper River Region, and the Central and North Bank Regions, providing Gambians with easier access to passport services without having to travel to the main offices in Banjul.

Applicants are required to pay the prescribed fee of D5,100 at any Ecobank branch nationwide and submit completed application files to the designated regional immigration offices. Supporting documents must include birth certificates, national identity cards, and, where applicable, parents’ supporting documents. For renewals, a copy of the expired biometric passport will suffice.

The GID has urged members of the public to adhere strictly to the scheduled dates and venues and to comply with all passport issuance regulations to ensure a smooth process.

The department reaffirmed its commitment to delivering citizen-centred, accessible, and efficient services, in line with the government’s vision to streamline public services for Gambians.

Trump Warns World Cup Visitors Against Misusing Tourist Visas

Washington, D.C. – 12th June 2026

United States President Donald Trump has issued a stern warning to visitors attending the 2026 FIFA World Cup, emphasizing that the country will not tolerate any misuse of tourist visas.

Speaking at a White House event, President Trump said, “Using the World Cup as an avenue to deceive American women will not be accepted!” He criticized visitors who, shortly after entering the United States on a tourist visa, engage in personal pursuits beyond the scope of their approved entry.

“You just entered the United States after going through very tough scrutiny by our immigration officials. Very tough. You came on a tourist visa. Now, not even 24 hours after arriving in our great country, you're already telling American women how much you love them. Give me a break,” Trump said.

The President warned that the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) would be closely monitoring such cases and that enforcement measures would be strengthened. “I will empower ICE, strengthen enforcement, and impose serious consequences on anyone abusing the purpose of their visa. Enjoy the games, have a great time, support your team, spend some money, and then leave,” he added.

Trump concluded his remarks with a patriotic call, urging visitors to respect U.S. laws during the international sporting event. “Thank you. God bless America!”

The statement comes as millions of football fans from around the world prepare to travel to the United States and Canada for the 2026 World Cup, highlighting the administration’s focus on ensuring that immigration rules are strictly followed even amid major global events.

Air Peace Evacuates 262 Nigerians from South Africa Amid Xenophobic Attacks

Lagos, Nigeria – 12th June 2026

Air Peace, in collaboration with the Federal Government of Nigeria, has successfully evacuated 262 Nigerian citizens from South Africa following a wave of xenophobic attacks targeting foreign nationals.

The Boeing 777 carrying the evacuees touched down safely in Lagos today, bringing relief to families who had been living in fear amid escalating violence and threats. Officials described the operation as a demonstration of Nigeria’s commitment to the safety and welfare of its citizens abroad.

In a statement, Air Peace emphasized that the mission went beyond transportation, delivering “hope, relief and the reassurance that Nigerians are never alone in times of crisis.” The airline highlighted that the evacuation reflects its longstanding dedication to humanitarian service and national responsibility.

The Federal Government of Nigeria also thanked Air Peace for its swift response, noting that protecting citizens abroad remains a top priority. The evacuees are being provided with medical attention, temporary accommodation, and support services to help them reintegrate after the ordeal.

This evacuation marks one of the largest recent efforts to assist Nigerians affected by xenophobic violence in South Africa, underscoring the continued need for regional cooperation and protection of foreign nationals.

BREAKING: Iran Warns US Against Strikes Amid Ongoing Negotiations

Tehran – 12th June 2026

Iran’s top military commander at the Khatam al-Anbiya headquarters has condemned what he describes as a “contradiction” in the United States’ approach, pursuing diplomatic negotiations while simultaneously carrying out military actions in the region.

Speaking today, the commander warned that any new US strikes would pose a serious threat to regional security, particularly around the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, a key global oil transit route. He cautioned that any military action against Iran would trigger a “more severe response,” heightening tensions in an already volatile area.

The remarks come amid ongoing discussions over Iran’s nuclear program, which the US and its allies have long sought to limit through diplomacy and sanctions. Analysts say the warning underscores the delicate balance between negotiation and military posturing in the region, and signals potential escalation if tensions are not carefully managed.

Regional and global markets are closely monitoring developments, as any conflict in the Strait of Hormuz could disrupt international energy supplies.

Thousands of Malawians Flee South Africa Amid Rising Xenophobic Threats

Lilongwe/Johannesburg – 12th June 2026

Thousands of Malawians have reportedly fled their homes in South Africa in recent days following escalating xenophobic threats targeting foreign nationals. The mass movement comes amid fears of attacks and harassment in several South African towns and cities.

Reports indicate that the majority of those fleeing are concentrated in areas with significant Malawian communities, including Johannesburg, Durban, and Pretoria. Many are seeking safety with relatives, in temporary shelters, or returning to Malawi, despite the long and costly journey.

Government officials in Lilongwe have expressed deep concern over the situation. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is reportedly coordinating with the Malawian High Commission in South Africa to provide urgent support, including safe transport and emergency assistance for affected citizens.

Civil society organizations and human rights groups have condemned the xenophobic rhetoric, urging South African authorities to protect foreign residents and prevent further attacks.

This latest exodus underscores the persistent vulnerabilities faced by migrant communities in South Africa, highlighting the need for regional cooperation to ensure the safety and rights of all foreign nationals living in the country.

National Assembly Debates Electricity Crisis as “Economic and Social Emergency”

Banjul, The Gambia – 11th June 2026
The National Assembly today engaged in a robust debate over the ongoing electricity crisis affecting large parts of The Gambia, following a Matter of the Day raised by Hon. Yahya Sanyang, Member for Latrikunda Sabiji.

Describing the prolonged power outages as “a full-blown economic and social emergency” rather than a mere inconvenience, Hon. Sanyang highlighted the severe impact on small and medium-sized enterprises. He noted that tailors, mechanics, hairdressers, and corner shop owners are facing devastating losses as their businesses struggle without reliable electricity.

Hon. Sanyang acknowledged explanations provided by the National Water and Electricity Company (NAWEC), which cited a 60-megawatt drop in regional power imports and delays in acquiring essential spare parts. However, he pressed for urgent action, calling on the Assembly to compel the Ministry of Petroleum and Energy and NAWEC to present a transparent roadmap to stabilize the national grid before mid-June. He also urged the government to develop a comprehensive strategy to upgrade local generation capacity at key facilities, including Kotu and Brikama.

In a related development, the Chairperson of the Finance and Public Accounts Committee (FPAC), Hon. Alhagie S. Darbo, presented a report on a study tour to Kenya on Programme-Based Budgeting (PBB). The tour, undertaken jointly with the Public Enterprises Committee and the Ministry of Finance and Economic Affairs from 15th to 19th December 2025, highlighted lessons on enhancing financial planning and accountability in public institutions.

The debate underscored growing concern among lawmakers over the persistent power shortages and their far-reaching economic and social consequences, signaling heightened pressure on the government to deliver immediate and sustainable solutions.

Iran's participation in the 2026 World Cup is being overshadowed by political tensions and reported travel restrictions. The Iranian Football Federation has warned FIFA that matches could be suspended if anti-Iran slogans or opposition flags are displayed in the stands. Reports also claim the team is based in Mexico despite playing all its group matches in the United States, creating logistical challenges.

Additional concerns include alleged visa restrictions and ticketing issues for Iranian supporters. The controversy has been further fueled by comments from U.S. President Donald Trump and reported requests by Iran and Egypt to limit LGBTQ+-related demonstrations during a match in Seattle.

The situation highlights the growing intersection of politics and sport at the World Cup.
