GALA STATEMENT ON THE FORCEFUL REMOVAL OF THE AUDITOR GENERAL & THE UNLAWFUL ARREST OF OUR COMRADES

Fellow Gambians,

The events of today serve as a sobering reminder of the alarming regression our country is experiencing. The hard-won change of 2016 built on promises of transparency, accountability, respect for the rule of law, and a government that listens to its people is being systematically undermined by those who pledged to uphold it.

The forced removal of the Auditor General, a public servant committed to exposing corruption, represents a grave assault on institutional integrity. Equally disturbing is the treatment of young citizens who were tear-gassed, arrested without cause, and subjected to police brutality simply for exercising their constitutional rights. Is the government proud of the scenes that unfolded today? The people of The Gambia will not be silent in the face of such injustice.

GALA’s message to all Gambians is clear, this is a collective struggle. We urge every citizen to stand up, speak out, and continue to protest peacefully until the Auditor General is reinstated and our comrades Alieu Bah, Omar Saibo Camara, and Kemo Fatty, and all those arrested are released unconditionally.

All power to the people!

FLASH REPORT BY GAMBIA POLICE FORCE

POLICE ARREST FIVE INDIVIDUALS FOR UNLAWFUL ASSEMBLY AT NATIONAL AUDIT OFFICE

Date: September 15, 2025

Police have arrested five individuals, including Omar Saibo Camara, Public Relations Officer of GALA, for unlawful assembly and common nuisance at the National Audit Office, Kanifing.

Those arrested are:
1. Kemo Fatty of Bakoteh
2. Alieu Bah of Brusubi
3. Mamamdou Camara, Jambanjelly
4. Omar Saibo Camara, of GALA
5. Bakary Tamba, Journalist

A journalist from Gambia Talent Promotion was also briefly arrested during the incident but released after screening, while the four remained in custody.

The arrests followed a gathering at the National Audit Office. During which, the GALA spokesperson attempted to conduct a press interview, using disparaging language and inciting colleagues to demand the release of those earlier arrested. This behavior prompted his arrest alongside the others.

Formal statements have been taken, and the suspects have been charged accordingly.

The GPF strongly advises media professionals to uphold journalistic standards and avoid interfering with police operations or engaging in activism under the guise of reporting.

The Police remind the public that unlawful gatherings and incitement will not be tolerated, and reassure citizens of their continued commitment to maintaining peace, order, and the rule of law.

Staff of the National Audit Office refused to allow the arrest of their boss, Auditor General Modou Ceesay, taking him in their own vehicle and leaving the police behind at the NAO premises.

Earlier, PIU officers had arrived at the office, demanding to see Ceesay outside. His team reportedly blocked the move, leading to tense push-and-pull exchanges at the premises.

Ceesay told journalists that he was at the office to continue his duties, amid reports of attempts to remove him from his position.

The Gambia Police Force, through its Anti-Crime Unit, has intensified visibility patrols within the Greater Banjul Area to address prevailing security concerns. On Sunday, September 14, patrol teams were deployed across strategic communities in the West Coast Region and Kanifing Municipality, including Brusubi, Sukuta, Abuko, Bundung, Tallinding, Latrik***a, Lamin, and other identified hot spots. The patrols focused on crime-prone locations such as ghettos, garages, and vehicle routes, with officers reporting a generally calm atmosphere attributed to increased police presence.

During the operation, two individuals, Muhammed Faal, 22, of Ebo Town, and Yaya Jaiteh, 29, of Churchill Town were arrested after being involved in a fight, with a pair of scissors recovered from one of the suspects.

Police say both men were handed over for further action, while assuring the public that similar patrols and community engagements will continue to suppress crime and enhance public safety nationwide.
