Today, senior lawyer and United Democratic Party (UDP) National Executive Member Borry S. Touray is being questioned at the Gambia Police Force Headquarters in Banjul after remarks he made at a recent political gathering drew police attention.

A police water cannon vehicle is positioned outside the headquarters as UDP supporters and other sympathisers gather to express their frustration, many arguing that his comments were taken out of context and misrepresented by political actors and the state broadcaster in a way they believe unnecessarily escalated the situation.

Politician Alhaji Mamadi Kurang, a former Secretary to the Janneh Commission, reacted publicly after visiting the scene, posting on Facebook: โ€œWhatโ€™s happening to Borry, I just came to police Headquarters, barricades everywhere. A policeman told me he is not inside?โ€

Supporters are also questioning why Touray is being interrogated, pointing to remarks made at some National Peopleโ€™s Party (NPP) rallies that they say were also derogatory, yet have not attracted similar police action.

MC Cham Sr., Last Surviving Delegate to Gambiaโ€™s Independence Talks, Dies at Home

MC Cham Sr., the final surviving member of the Gambian delegation to the landmark Marlborough Conference that negotiated the countryโ€™s independence from Britain, died on Friday at his home in Banjul, a family source said.

Mr. Cham died shortly after Friday prayers following a brief illness, the family said. Details of the funeral arrangements have not yet been announced.

As a delegate to the Marlborough Conference, Mr. Cham helped shape the negotiations that paved the way for The Gambiaโ€™s emergence as a sovereign nation in 1965. His death closes the chapter on a generation of political figures who witnessedโ€”and helped guideโ€”the countryโ€™s transition to self-rule.

May Allah SWT forgive his shortcomings and grant him Jannatul Firdaus. Our heartfelt condolences go out to his family.
