IT'S FRIDAY - TIME FOR TRADITIONAL DRESSES!
It's Friday, and time for beautiful, colourful kaftans and flowing gowns.
When you come to The Gambia, don't miss the opportunity to have your own traditional African dress made by skilled Gambian tailors.
You can choose your style and favourite colours and wear them on Fridays, at different ceremonies and festivals or just any day you choose. Nice dresses and a combination of two-piece dresses with jeans, trousers or different tops are a really great way to take a small part of Gambian culture with you and apply it to your daily life when you are back home. By doing that, you will support local businesses in The Gambia as well.
There is a wide choice of fabrics at local markets and you can find tailors almost at every corner. They do an excellent job, and Gambians will always be happy to see you in traditional clothing. It is also a great way to learn and know more about culture and tradition. For an easy journey and less struggle, we recommend that you take your local guide with you. They know the best shops and tailors.
Gambians usually wear traditional dresses on Fridays for Friday prayers, holidays and special occasions such as the naming ceremony, weddings, funerals, etc. Some people who have not yet adopted European-style dresses wear African-style dresses every day.
