Ousainu Darboe, leader of the United Democratic Party (UDP), criticized the Gambian government for raising salaries for senior government officials while leaving groundnut prices for farmers unchanged at 38,000 dalasi per ton over the past three years.

Speaking in Niumi Jinack, Darboe said government budget priorities have neglected rural communities and pledged that a UDP administration would cut excessive spending on the annual “Meet the People Tour” from 53 million dalasi to 10 million dalasi.

He said the savings would be used to provide free fertilizer to farmers and improve local water access, including through desalination projects. Darboe also called for the replacement of President Adama Barrow and his allies, saying new leadership was needed to meet the country’s development needs.

The Heads of State and Government of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) convened at the December 2024 Summit in Abuja, have adopted a wide ranging measure aimed at reducing the cost of air travel in the region. From January 1, 2026, all ECOWAS Member States will abolish air travel tariffs and reduce passenger and security tariffs by 25 per cent, in accordance with the Supplemental Act relating to the Aviation Sector Taxes, Taxes and Charges civil.

The decision responds to age old concerns over the high cost of air travel in West Africa, which is considered an obstacle to tourism, trade and the free movement of people and goods.

The implementation of this reform will be monitored by the ECOWAS Commission through a Regional Air Traffic Economic Monitoring Mechanism, expected to lead to lower fares, increased passenger traffic, strengthening regional airlines and deepening regional integration.
