Cameroon's President Paul Biya Cleared for Eighth Term as Opposition Leader Barred.

Cameroon’s Constitutional Council has disqualified prominent opposition figure Maurice Kamto from the upcoming October 12 presidential election, citing internal party disputes that Kamto calls politically motivated. This ruling clears the path for 92-year-old President Paul Biya, the world’s oldest sitting leader, to seek an unprecedented eighth term in office.

Biya, who has ruled Cameroon since 1982, remains the clear frontrunner in a race that now features just 12 approved candidates out of 83 applicants. Key contenders include former allies turned critics Bello Bouba Maigari and Issa Tchiroma Bakary, as well as younger opposition figures Cabral Libii and Akere Muna, who are seen as Biya’s most viable challengers. However, analysts warn that a fragmented opposition diminishes any real threat to Biya’s long-standing dominance.

Civil society groups are calling for opposition unity, arguing that only a coalition could mount an effective challenge. Should Biya win again, he could potentially govern Cameroon into his late 90s, extending one of the longest presidential reigns in modern history.

Gambia Armed Forces Condemns Soldier’s Involvement in Vulture Killings for Rituals.

The Gambia Armed Forces (GAF) has strongly condemned the killing of vultures allegedly carried out by one of its personnel, Lance Corporal Jallow Alieu, in collaboration with a civilian, Ebrima Khan. Both suspects are currently in custody, Jallow with the Military Police and Khan with the national police.

According to preliminary findings, the pair are accused of hunting vultures and using their heads for ritual purposes, an act the GAF says is illegal and contradicts its core values and commitment to environmental protection.

In a press statement, the military leadership described the act as "ungodly" and a clear violation of both national wildlife protection laws and international conservation protocols. The Chief of Defence Staff and the High Command reiterated the institution’s zero-tolerance policy for such conduct and pledged full cooperation with the ongoing investigation.

The GAF affirmed that those found responsible will face disciplinary action under military and national laws. It also restated its commitment to supporting environmental preservation efforts in collaboration with government agencies and the public.

Two men, Muhammed Krubally and Muhammed Jawo, accused of engaging in an indecent act between males, have been granted bail by the Brusubi Magistrates’ Court.

Initially denied bail, they were later granted release on D500,000 each with two Gambian sureties. The prosecution claims they were caught performing oral s*x on each other. During the hearing, the defence cross-examined the arresting officer, who said the act took place in an unlit, unfinished house.

The case has been adjourned to August 12 for further cross-examination.

Zambian authorities have moved to address public health and environmental concerns after a toxic spill from a Chinese-owned copper mine released an estimated 50 million litres of hazardous sludge into the Zambezi River and surrounding areas.

The spill has raised alarm over its potential impact on local communities and ecosystems. In response, the United States evacuated personnel from the town of Chambishi, citing contamination risks.

Zambian officials, however, assured the public that the situation is under control and that measures are in place to mitigate further risks.

Sudanese Forces Down Emirati Aircraft Amid Rising Tensions.

The Sudanese Air Force has reportedly shot down a United Arab Emirates (UAE) aircraft suspected of carrying mercenaries and military equipment for paramilitary forces, intensifying diplomatic strains between the two nations.

The incident occurred at Nyala Airport in the conflict-ridden South Darfur region, where tensions have been mounting amid Sudan’s ongoing internal conflict. The Sudanese government has not officially confirmed the details, but sources suggest the aircraft was linked to foreign support for paramilitary groups.

This latest development marks a significant escalation in the deteriorating relationship between Sudan and the UAE, with accusations of external interference further complicating the volatile situation on the ground.
