Satang Dumbuya Appointed Chairperson of the National Youth Council

In a significant move to bolster youth representation and leadership in The Gambia, Satang Dumbuya has been appointed as the Chairperson of the 14th Council of the National Youth Council (NYC). The announcement was made by the Minister of Youth & Sports, Hon. Bakary Y. Badjie.

Satang, an enthusiastic and dynamic young leader, is widely recognized for her commitment to teamwork, excellence, and professionalism. She has earned a reputation for adhering to job standards and procedures while demonstrating flexibility, critical thinking, and creativity in addressing challenges. Her strong interpersonal skills have enabled her to forge positive relationships with colleagues, youth, and stakeholders, creating an environment of mutual respect, harmony, and tolerance.

Beyond her leadership, Satang has been a steadfast advocate for youth and women’s empowerment. Through her efforts, she has contributed significantly to the national development agenda and the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). She has worked tirelessly with The Gambia’s Truth, Reconciliation and Reparations Commission (TRRC), where her contributions helped shape key narratives and provide support to victims of human rights violations.

Satang is also an influential social media advocate, using her platforms to amplify the voices of young people and women across the country. With a large following, she has become a recognized youth champion, working in close partnership with youth from diverse sectors. She firmly believes that no meaningful development can occur without the active participation and inclusion of young people and women.

In addition to Satang’s appointment, Mariama Cham has been named the Formal Representative, a role that will further enhance the Council's efforts in advocating for youth-led initiatives.

The NYC’s 14th Council is expected to bring new energy and vision to youth policy-making and advocacy in The Gambia, with both Satang and Mariama playing crucial roles in empowering young Gambians to contribute actively to the nation’s growth.

Talib Bensuda and the Changing Face of Gambian Leadership Ahead of 2026

As The Gambia edges closer to the 2026 elections, conversations about leadership, youth participation, and accountability are growing louder. At the center of many of these discussions is Talib Ahmed Bensuda, the Mayor of Kanifing, a figure who has quietly but steadily built a reputation as one of the country’s most reform-minded local leaders.

Since taking office, Bensuda has earned attention for his hands-on, problem-solving style. His administration in the Kanifing Municipality has focused on cleaning up neighborhoods, improving waste management, modernizing council operations, and pushing for digital tools that make local governance more efficient.

For many residents, these efforts have made local government feel more responsive and visible. “We now see the council taking real action,” one resident from Serekunda Market shared. “It’s not perfect, but there’s a sense that things are moving.”

Still, like most development projects, progress has not come without challenges. Limited resources, bureaucratic delays, and sustainability concerns continue to test how lasting these reforms can be.

When Bensuda first entered office, many Gambians viewed him with cautious optimism, intrigued by his youth and energy, but uncertain of what that would mean in practice. Over time, public perception has shifted.

Recent discussions, both online and in community forums, suggest that many people now see him as a capable administrator who values results. This raises the question: Is Talib Ahmed Bensouda the new face of The Gambia?

Tell us, what do you think?

Joe Biden Exits Presidential Race: Kamala Harris Takes Center Stage

In a stunning turn of events, Joe Biden has withdrawn from the US presidential race, despite his firm declarations in recent weeks to remain the Democratic nominee. This unexpected move has significant implications for Vice-President Kamala Harris, the Democratic Party, and incumbent President Donald Trump.

Kamala Harris: A Risky but Necessary Choice

With Biden’s endorsement, Kamala Harris’s prospects as the Democratic nominee have surged. Biden praised his decision to choose her as his vice-president four years ago, calling it his best decision. Harris expressed her honor at receiving his endorsement and vowed to do everything possible to secure the nomination.

The majority of Democrats may rally behind Harris to avoid uncertainty less than a month before the Democratic convention. Politically and practically, this makes sense. She is next in the constitutional line of succession, and bypassing the first Black woman on a presidential ticket would look terrible for the party. Additionally, she would immediately have access to the campaign’s $100 million in funds.

However, there are risks. Harris's approval ratings are nearly as low as Biden’s, and she fares similarly against Trump in polls. Her tenure as vice-president has been challenging, particularly her role in addressing the root causes of the migration crisis at the US-Mexico border, which opened her up to criticism. Nonetheless, she has effectively handled issues like abortion rights. Importantly, her 2020 presidential campaign struggled due to fumbled interviews, a lack of vision, and poor management, causing her to drop out before the primaries.

Opting for Harris is a risk, but with no safe options and the stakes as high as a possible Trump victory, it’s a risk Democrats may have to take.

Democratic Convention: Chaotic Yet Gripping

Political conventions have become highly scripted, extended commercials for the presidential nominee. Last week’s Republican convention was no different, even with Trump’s lengthy, sometimes rambling speech. However, next month’s Democratic convention in Chicago promises to be dramatically different.

With Biden’s withdrawal, any existing script has been discarded. Even if the party unites behind Harris, planning and controlling the convention’s proceedings will be challenging. Should Harris fail to unite the party, the convention could become a political free-for-all, with various candidates vying for the nomination both publicly and behind closed doors.

This could result in gripping political theatre, live and unpredictable, unlike anything the American public has ever witnessed.

GDC Leader Mamma Kandeh Accuses NPP of Spreading False Propaganda

**Banjul, The Gambia** — Mamma Kandeh, the leader of the opposition Gambia Democratic Congress (GDC), has accused certain executive members of President Barrow's ruling National People's Party (NPP) of launching a campaign of false propaganda against him and his party. According to Kandeh, the NPP is spreading misinformation across the country, falsely claiming that the GDC is collaborating with the main opposition United Democratic Party (UDP).

In a statement reported by The Standard, Kandeh warned Gambians to be cautious of the false information being circulated about his character and the GDC. "The people doing this are people who want to survive on lies, and that is unacceptable, especially coming from a party that is governing a whole country. How do you find solace in destroying others?" Kandeh said.

He further explained that the NPP is falsely alleging a collaboration between the GDC and the UDP to undermine his credibility. "They are going around telling people Mamma Kandeh is working with the UDP. They know they are lying, but they are doing it because they think that would bring me down. They should stop the lies because very soon they will be exposed," he asserted.

Kandeh emphasized that the GDC has nothing to hide and would openly announce any political agreements. "We will not be afraid to announce an agreement with any party when it happens. You can say you don’t like us, but we are not cowards. Those who are doing this know themselves, but no matter how they continue to lie, we will continue to flourish. We are all seeing the difficulties this country is facing," he stated.

As tensions rise, the GDC leader’s remarks highlight the ongoing political maneuvering in The Gambia, urging transparency and truthfulness in the political arena.

Justice Minister Dawda A. Jallow Urges Legislators to Avoid Labeling ECOMIG as "Foreign Occupation Forces"

Banjul, The Gambia — In a recent parliamentary session, the Minister of Justice and Attorney General, Dawda A. Jallow, has called on legislators to refrain from referring to the ECOWAS military mission, ECOMIG, as "foreign occupation forces." His remarks came during the second reading and debate on the National Security Council Bill last week, emphasizing the importance of precise terminology in legislative discourse.

In 2017, ECOWAS authorized the deployment of troops to The Gambia to restore peace and order following former President Yahya Jammeh's refusal to concede election defeat to Adama Barrow. While this intervention was initially welcomed, there has been growing sentiment among Gambians, including some National Assembly Members, advocating for ECOMIG's withdrawal to allow Gambian security forces to take over.

Minister Jallow, who introduced the National Security Council Bill, addressed these concerns directly, stating: “I heard you mention a term foreign occupation which I would not encourage members [of the National Assembly] to use. Gambia is not under occupation, and I think we need to look at those words carefully. Gambia is not under occupation, so we cannot use those words as a legislature. They [ECOMIG] are not an occupying force and I think these clarifications were made several times in the past.”

His comments aim to shift the narrative surrounding ECOMIG's presence and highlight the mission's role in supporting The Gambia during a critical transition period. The debate continues as the country navigates its path towards self-reliance and stability in its security sector.

Good morning, Gambia!

Hon. Fatou Cham’s Vote Against FGM Report Raises Concerns Over Commitment to Women's and Children's Rights

In a surprising move that has sparked widespread concern, Hon. Fatou Cham voted against the adoption of a crucial report aimed at maintaining the ban on Female Ge***al Mutilation (FGM). This decision starkly contradicts her campaign promises to protect women and children, raising serious questions about her commitment to their rights and health.

Hon. Cham, who has built her political career on advocating for the protection and empowerment of women and children, has faced immediate backlash from her supporters and human rights activists. The report in question was designed to highlight the ongoing need to uphold the ban on FGM, a practice that has severe health and psychological consequences for girls and women.

By voting against the report, Cham has not only contradicted her public statements but also undermined the trust of those who believed in her dedication to safeguarding vulnerable populations. Her decision has cast a shadow over her reliability as a champion for women’s and children’s rights, causing many to question the authenticity of her campaign pledges.

FGM, a deeply entrenched cultural practice in some communities, has been condemned globally for its harmful effects. The ban on FGM in The Gambia was a significant step towards protecting girls and women from this practice. Cham’s vote against reinforcing this ban is seen by many as a step backward in the fight against gender-based violence.

Human rights organizations have expressed their disappointment, emphasizing that leaders must remain steadfast in their commitment to protecting human rights. “This vote is a betrayal to all the women and children who look up to Hon. Cham for protection and advocacy,” said a spokesperson from a leading women's rights organization. “Her actions today contradict her words and raise doubts about her dedication to the cause.”

As the debate continues, the spotlight remains on Hon. Fatou Cham, with many urging her to clarify her stance and reaffirm her commitment to the rights and health of women and children. The hope is that this incident will serve as a wake-up call for greater accountability and consistency in the fight against harmful practices like FGM.
