Today marks a pivotal moment a historic step forward for The Gambia as our nation formally accedes to the African Union Convention on Ending Violence Against Women and Girls.
This long-awaited commitment is a testament to the unwavering advocacy of Gambian women and girls, and we extend our deepest gratitude to Honorable Minister Dawda Jallow – Attorney General and Minister of Justice, for championing this cause.
As REFELA, we have tirelessly advocated for the ratification of this convention across all African nations. We are immensely proud to see The Gambia join the ranks of progressive countries taking a firm stand against gender-based violence.
This is not just a legal obligation - it is a moral imperative to protect the dignity, safety, and rights of African women and girls, who have endured systemic abuse for far too long.
While we celebrate this milestone, we urge the Government of The Gambia to ensure that this convention translates into tangible legal reforms and full implementation. History has shown that ratification alone is not enough; we must see enforceable policies, robust accountability mechanisms, and widespread awareness to create real change.
This victory belongs to every Gambian woman and girl, and its significance cannot be overstated.
It is a defining moment for gender equality in our nation and a legacy-defining achievement for your leadership.
In recognition of this historic step, REFELA The Gambia Chapter looks forward to presenting you with a token of our appreciation in the days ahead.
Today, we celebrate. Tomorrow, we continue the work to ensure that this convention becomes a lived reality for all.
The Gambian woman is rising and her voice will no longer be silenced.
