Nioro Delivers Ramadan Sugar Distribution Project

The community of Nioro Jattaba village has successfully delivered its annual Ramadan Sugar Distribution Project, a charitable initiative aimed at supporting households during the holy month of fasting.

The project, which was formalised in 2019, was designed to consolidate individual efforts into a coordinated and inclusive community-driven exercise. Since its inception, the initiative has grown significantly, with this year’s distribution reaching more households than ever before.
What initially began as a modest gesture, distributing one 50kg bag of sugar among four households, has now improved to the level where two households or fewer share a single bag.

This year’s distribution was coordinated under the leadership of Mr Sheriff Bah who described the project as a meaningful expression of collective charity. He noted that the impressive level of participation reflects the community’s spiritual devotion and desire to earn divine rewards during the month of Ramadan.

One of the lead project coordinators, Mr Modika Sowe, reflected on the progress made since the project’s early days. “It was not an easy take-off at the beginning,” he noted, “but thanks to ongoing advocacy and a transparent approach to fund management and project implementation, the initiative has gained increasing support year after year.” He also revealed that plans are now being considered to expand the scope of the project to provide more comprehensive support for households during Ramadan.

Speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, Mr Musa Sowe commended the Nioro Jattaba community for its unity and the spirit of generosity demonstrated through this initiative. He praised the youth, in particular, for driving the project forward, and highlighted the importance of self-help and shared responsibility. “The same humanity and sense of reward that international donors seek in helping others,” he said, “is what our own people have embraced and demonstrated through this successful Ramadan package.”

About Ramadan (in brief)

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, observed by Muslims worldwide as a month of fasting, prayer, reflection, and community
The month of Ramadan is a time of heightened spiritual reflection, charity, and compassion. The Qur'an states, "Those who spend their wealth [in charity] by night and day, in secret and in public – they will have their reward with their Lord" (Surah Al-Baqarah: 274).

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) also said: “Whoever gives iftar to one who is fasting will have a reward like theirs, without that detracting from their reward in the slightest” (Hadith – Tirmidhi).

Supporting others during Ramadan is among the most virtuous deeds, and such initiatives not only ease hardship but also strengthen bonds within the community.

From Nioro to Rhode Island, Nurse Sarjo Bah Overcomes Obstacles

Sarjo Bah, a registered nurse at Rhode Island Hospital in the United States, has shared her inspiring journey of overcoming challenges to achieve her dream. Originally from Nioro Jattaba, The Gambia, Bah faced numerous hurdles on her path to becoming a nurse.

"I remember the first time I took anatomy and physiology, and it didn't go well," she recalled. "I spoke with my professor and decided to withdraw from the class to protect my GPA. I went home in tears, feeling defeated, and told my husband that I couldn't do it."

At the time, she was working full-time at a senior living facility, making it difficult to balance work and studies. After careful consideration, she decided to take a break from her studies and focus on her career. She successfully secured a position at Roger Williams Hospital and later transitioned to Rhode Island Hospital, where she continues to work today.

After a year away from school, Bah returned with renewed focus and determination. She retook the anatomy and physiology course, achieving an A. She continued her studies with dedication, maintaining an impressive GPA throughout her nursing program.

Towards the end of her studies, she faced another setback when she was not selected to complete her final semester during the summer due to the lottery-based program. Undeterred, she chose to take the Practical Nurse (PN) exams and began working as a Practical Nurse while completing her Registered Nurse (RN) degree.

"I'm proud of what I've accomplished, and I want to share my story not to brag, but to inspire others who may be facing similar challenges," Bah said. "It's important to keep going, even when things get tough."

Editorial Note: Sarjo's story is presented as an inspiration to aspiring healthcare professionals as it reflects the importance of perseverance and resilience in overcoming obstacles.

Nioro Jattaba on Monday 16th December 2024 inaugurated a solar-powered borehole in its new settlement area, where hundreds of residents previously faced the challenge of drawing water from old, abandoned wells or travelling hundreds of metres to join the queues at the only borehole in the village, built during the First Republic.

The new borehole project, donated by Dream Baby Foundation with support from Jushi through Senegal-born philanthropist Khadija Sokhna Neumann, provides much-needed relief to the fast-growing community.

The borehole, according to Ebrima Marong, Coordinator of Working Water – The Gambia, who served as the implementing partner, is built with an overhead tank with a capacity of 3,000 litres. Drilled to a depth of 50 metres, he said the borehole has the capacity to pump up to 60,000 litres of water daily.

On the merits of her support, Khadija said she owes it to her late father because he was an amazing man who built the first blind hospital in Senegal, as well as a hospital for the handicapped. “He was an advocate for a lot of things, so I just followed in his footsteps. That’s life. But I’m proud and I’m happy. And I think that every day.”

Speaking on behalf of the Alkalo of Nioro Jattaba, Jabel Bah hailed the gesture as valuable and timely. He said it comes at a time when the village is concerned about the urgent need to extend social amenities such as water and electricity to residents living far from the village centre. While the project addresses the needs of a very important part of the village, he pointed out that there are still many other locations that continue to face the daily struggle for clean, drinkable water. He urged the government and NGOs to take note for possible intervention.

Men, women, the elderly, and the young who gathered to witness the gesture expressed their gratitude to Dream Baby Foundation, its CEO Khadija Sokhna Neumann, and her team, who are in Africa to show generosity to communities in need.

Known for his dedication, he was among the first to benefit from formal education, a privilege that enabled him to serve not only Nioro but also the broader community with distinction.

Throughout his life, Mr. Colley was deeply committed to Islam and humanity, as attested by numerous speakers from Nioro and its environs. His legacy as a devout Muslim and a compassionate individual will be cherished by all who knew him.

Abdoulie B. Bah Bags Double Master's Degrees

From a humble beginning with a Senior School Certificate in Nioro Jattaba to graduating with honours in Mathematics and Economics from the University of The Gambia (UTG) in 2022, Abdoulie B. Bah has pursued a double Master's in keeping his dream alive..

Mr Bah's academic journey took him to Italy, where he enrolled at L’Aquila University and earned a Master's in Mathematical Engineering. He later advanced to Brno University of Technology in the Czech Republic, completing another Master's in Applied and Interdisciplinary Mathematics.

Speaking about his motivation, Mr Bah said his choices were inspired by his passion for "Real Mathematics – Mathematics for Real-World Applications." Reflecting on his journey, he remarked: *"I feel good about this achievement. It is through the help of Allah that I am here today. I have always been focused on my studies, and thank God I have reached this point. It has not been easy, but the challenges have made me stronger."

For those aspiring to follow a similar path, he offered words of encouragement: "Determination and hard work are the keys to success. Chase your dreams."

A youth commentator in Nioro described Mr Bah's achievement as long-awaited but unsurprising, given his family's significant contributions to education in the village. Abdoulie's late parents, though successful farmers with substantial cattle herding and crop cultivation ventures, were deeply committed to education.
His mother is remembered as a veteran cook in the school feeding programme, while his father served as a prominent member of the school management committee – both roles performed voluntarily.

Abdoulie may be the youngest in his family, but his remarkable academic success continues the legacy of achievement and dedication instilled by his parents.
