This amazing sweet is called nougatina, it’s so soft that you can barely hold it, it’s made out of egg white, sugar and almonds and you can only find it at Lygizos and old-school pastry shop in Chora. The dessert has a big history, it was created by Giorgos Lygizos an influential pastry chef who learned from Galanos who came in Andros from Alexandria in 1930 and brought his unique French pastry techniques. The dessert is so good that it becomes sold out from the morning. Some people visit the island only for that! @ Ζαχαροπλαστειον Λυγιζος Για περισσότερα τέτοια ποστ ακολουθήστε μας στο Instagram

Hey friends! We're coming out of a deep quarantine hibernation with some new cooking skills (just ask Marina about her strawberry cakes) and a greater appreciation for Athens and the many wonderful people and places it holds.

But we know the future isn't certain, especially for small business owners. This is why we've decided to start a new series, Athens After Quarantine, where we highlight some great business owners throughout the city and ask them questions about what this time has been like for them, and what's on their mind moving forward.

First up is Val Goutsi, who has a really lovely shop in Koukaki. We can't stress enough how lovely it is there, not just because of how beautiful all her products are, but also because of how deeply personal the whole experience is. Read more here! https://uncover-mag.com/athens-after-quarantine-val-gousti/ We'll be rolling out more in the next days and weeks, so stay tuned.

Are there any small businesses here that you love? Please let us know about them in the comments!

Val Goutsi has a lovely little ceramics shop in Koukaki. She's telling us what she's looking forward to after quarantine, and how Athenians can support her.

Where else in the city can you get a perfect sando? Head to Birdman for their pork neck sando, made with fresh milk bread (😍😍), red cabbage, and a homemade sauce. We’d also recommend trying their ramen - it’s not too rich or too watered down. Make sure to eat it as soon as it comes out, noodles first, and slurp up all the broth at the end. @ Birdman Athens

Today we are celebrating Clean Monday, which marks the end of carnival and the beginning of Lent. Everyone eats seafood and of course we wouldn’t miss it! On this day we love to go to Varvakeio fish market; it’s the only day of the year that it stays open for 24 hours. It’s a nonstop celebration; customers chat with the vendors, some still dressed up from their carnival party, others with their families buying the essentials for Clean Monday's feast. We bought shrimp, calamari, and of course octopus. Lagana, a flat bread, wasn’t missing from our table - it goes perfectly with taramosalata, and we wash down everything with ouzo and tsipouro. Cheers everyone! Kali Sarakosti! @ Athens, Greece

Today we’re getting ready to celebrate carnival, or apokries, one of the country’s oldest celebrations that dates back to ancient times - back then, this celebration marked the end of winter and the arrival of spring, and it was associated with the worship of everyone’s favorite god of partying, Dionysos. There are celebrations around the country, but in Athens we always head to Metaxorgeio for their parade. You’ll find lots of great costumes and raki, and the party will continue long after the crowds on the street disperse.

There is so much good street food in Athens. Of course we love souvlaki, but there is so much more to try, from sandwiches to toasty tiropita.
