NEW ATHENS METRO LINE 4 Reaches Key Tunnel Milestone
A key milestone has been reached in the construction of Athens Metro Line 4, a project expected to significantly change mobility for residents and visitors. The tunnel boring machine Athina, one of two TBMs building the Goudi–Galatsi line, has completed 90 percent of its route and is nearing breakthrough at the Evangelismos shaft.
Athina, which started from Katechaki, has already excavated the tunnel through areas including Goudi, Zografou, Ilisia, the University Campus and Kaisariani. Once its drive is completed, the 100-metre-long TBM will be dismantled, marking the completion of a critical section of the project.
Meanwhile, the twin TBM Niki is advancing from the opposite direction. Starting from the Veikou shaft, it has already completed 2.6 kilometres, equal to 37 percent of its total route, and is approaching the Kypseli Square station area.
It is then due to pass through densely populated neighbourhoods, including Dikastiria, Alexandras, Exarchia, Akadimias and Kolonaki, before reaching Evangelismos.
Despite delays affecting some of the 15 stations, linked to legal or technical issues, progress on the tunnel is reinforcing expectations that Line 4 will improve visitor access across the city. The new line is expected to support faster connections to museums, university facilities, parks and cultural and food districts, strengthening the city break offer in Athens.
