Tobias Forge: From Masks… to the Depths of the Sea!

Tobias Forge recently revealed to Metal Hammer UK that he wants to start scuba diving, believing it will help him feel less claustrophobic when wearing a mask on stage.

After 15 years performing as multiple masked characters, Forge admits he has developed “uncomfortable claustrophobia.” He also recalled an incident in 2015, as Papa Emeritus III, when his mask caused him to panic on stage, as access to the venue was limited and he felt “trapped.” He had to remove all props and restart the performance.

Tobias says he has always been drawn to the sea and that “in another life, I would be a wreck diver.” He has always wanted to do scuba diving, but in the past he didn’t have the money and later didn’t have the time. Now, however, he is determined to get his diving license.

Ghost were founded in 2006 and played their first shows in 2010 around the release of their debut album, Opus Eponymous. Forge originally appeared as Papa Emeritus, a dark, satanic pope with skeletal facepaint. With each new album, he changes character, always wearing a mask, and in 2025/2026 he appears as Papa V Perpetua, with a mask covering only the upper half of his face.

Ghost continue to rock on:

• The Skeletour was completed in 2025.
•The North American leg kicks off on January 21, 2026, in Orlando, Florida.
• All 2025–2026 shows will be phone-free to allow a real connection with the audience.

Celebrating 12 Years of “If You Have Ghosts”!

On November 20th, 2013, Ghost released the “If You Have Ghosts” EP, produced by Dave Grohl () of Nirvana & Foo Fighters.

🎶 About the EP:

It features four covers — If You Have Ghosts, I’m a Marionette, Crucified, Waiting for the Night — and one live track, Secular Haze, recorded on July 28th, 2013 at the Music Hall of Williamsburg () in NYC.
Secular Haze was written by A Ghoul Writer (Tobias Forge).

✨ I’m a Marionette & Waiting for the Night had appeared on special editions of Infestissumam, while the other two covers were newly recorded for the EP.

In late 2013, all tracks were included in Infestissumam Redux.

On November 19, 2021, “Me and That Man” released the track “Under the Spell”, a collaboration between Tobias Forge (aka Mary Goore) and Adam “Nergal” Darski.

The official music video premiered two days earlier, on November 17, 2021, introducing a dark, ritualistic visual style that perfectly complements the song’s atmosphere.

The song appears on the third Me and That Man album, blending bluesy occult rock with the signature storytelling of both creators.

Birthday Ritual Time! 🎂

Σήμερα έχω γενέθλια — και τα μοιράζομαι με τον μοναδικό Jonas Åkerlund ()! Όχι κι άσχημη παρέα, έτσι;

Εκείνος κλείνει τα 60, εγώ τα 47 — δυο γενιές, αλλά με κοινή αγάπη για τη μουσική και τη σκοτεινή αισθητική.

Μόλις τρία χρόνια πριν το πεντηκοστό ritual, κι ακόμη δεν έχω αποφασίσει αν θα φορέσω πέπλο της γιαγιάκας ή στέμμα αιώνιας έφηβης. 😁

Σας ευχαριστώ μέσα από την καρδιά μου για όλες τις ευχές και την αγάπη — σημαίνουν πραγματικά πολλά για μένα.

Happy Birthday, Jonas Åkerlund! 🇸🇪

Born on November 10, 1965, in Stockholm, Hans Uno Jonas Åkerlund, is a director, filmmaker, and musician, known for his collaborations with artists such as Ghost, Rammstein, Metallica, Lady Gaga, Ozzy Osbourne, The Rolling Stones, Paul McCartney, and many others.

Before establishing himself as one of the world’s most acclaimed music video directors, he was a founding member and drummer of the pioneering black metal band Bathory — an experience that shaped his dark, cinematic style.

He has been honored with Grammy Awards, MTV Video Music Awards, and UK Music Video Awards, and has directed feature films such as Spun (2002), Lords of Chaos (2018), and Polar (2019).

On 5 May 2022, he directed the Netflix series “Clark”, based on the life of the infamous Swedish criminal Clark Olofsson — in which Tobias Forge made a cameo appearance.

Connection with Ghost:

Mr. Jonas Åkerlund was a co-producer of Rite Here, Rite Now, the official Ghost concert film.
His wife, Mrs. Bea Åkerlund, creates the iconic costumes of Papa Emeritus.

Beyond their professional collaboration, Jonas and Bea are also friends with Tobias Forge, strengthening their close personal and creative connection with the band.
