One building. A recording studio, rehearsal space, venue, home, record label and meeting place.

Over the past 14 years, Total Refreshment Centre has become one of the most important spaces in London’s independent music community, helping shape artists including Shabaka Hutchings, Alabaster DePlume, Nubya Garcia, Joe Armon-Jones, The Comet Is Coming and many more.

For Time Capsule, Euan McGinty sat down with founder Lex Blondin to talk about how it all began: from South London squats and DIY studios to a badly written online advert that changed everything.

Today we’re focusing on Nippon Acid Folk - a journey into Japan’s 1970s folk underground, where protest song, private press poetry, psychedelic arrangements and intimate homemade visions began to blur into something radical.

Its companion, Nippon Psychedelic Soul, opens another window into the same decade: a world of groove, fuzz, spiritual yearning and post-’60s imagination.

Both records are now available separately, or together as the Nippon Trip Bundle via Bandcamp.

🗼🚲 tokyobike and Time Capsule invite you to a talk and listening evening, led by Kay Suzuki, to celebrate the launch of the new record section in the tokyobike London shop.

The session will explore how Jamaican and British reggae influenced Japan’s music culture in the 1970s and 1980s, eventually shaping a distinctly Japanese interpretation of reggae, lovers rock, city pop and tropical pop.

Centred around Time Capsule’s acclaimed compilation series Tokyo Riddim 1976–1985 and Tokyo Riddim Vol. 2 1979–1986, Kay will play selected tracks from the records alongside related music that helps trace the wider story - from imported reggae sounds to the unique Japanese productions that emerged in their wake.

A special audiophile sound system will be installed by , creating an intimate listening environment for music and cultural discovery.
