Focus in on the Elephant’s Cave 👀
Potentially Crete’s most unique site, the Elephants Cave is a real adventure dive. You’ll find your way in via a submerged entranceway, around 10m deep.
The cavern then expands into what is known as ‘the cathedral’ - it’s possible to surface here, and see the intense reds and whites of the stalactites and stalagmites inside.
Why is it called the Elephant’s cave? As you dive within the cave, you’ll be able to see bones and fossil markings of elephants, and deer, which have been to around 70ka. The specific species of both animals are now extinct, (Elephas chaniensis, and Cervidae sp.) but the remains preserved at depth are incredible artefacts. It is a real privilege to dive here! 🐘
