Today we are reading Isaiah 58 which tells us that a repentant heart of service is even more important than fasting:

1 “Shout with the voice of a trumpet blast.
Shout aloud! Don’t be timid.
Tell my people Israel of their sins!
2 Yet they act so pious!
They come to the Temple every day
and seem delighted to learn all about me.
They act like a righteous nation
that would never abandon the laws of its God.
They ask me to take action on their behalf,
pretending they want to be near me.
3 ‘We have fasted before you!’ they say.
‘Why aren’t you impressed?
We have been very hard on ourselves,
and you don’t even notice it!’

“I will tell you why!” I respond.
“It’s because you are fasting to please yourselves.
Even while you fast,
you keep oppressing your workers.
4 What good is fasting
when you keep on fighting and quarreling?
This kind of fasting
will never get you anywhere with me.
5 You humble yourselves
by going through the motions of penance,
bowing your heads
like reeds bending in the wind.
You dress in burlap
and cover yourselves with ashes.
Is this what you call fasting?
Do you really think this will please the Lord?

6 “No, this is the kind of fasting I want:
Free those who are wrongly imprisoned;
lighten the burden of those who work for you.
Let the oppressed go free,
and remove the chains that bind people.
7 Share your food with the hungry,
and give shelter to the homeless.
Give clothes to those who need them,
and do not hide from relatives who need your help.

8 “Then your salvation will come like the dawn,
and your wounds will quickly heal.
Your godliness will lead you forward,
and the glory of the Lord will protect you from behind.
9 Then when you call, the Lord will answer.
‘Yes, I am here,’ he will quickly reply.

“Remove the heavy yoke of oppression.
Stop pointing your finger and spreading vicious rumors!
10 Feed the hungry,
and help those in trouble.
Then your light will shine out from the darkness,
and the darkness around you will be as bright as noon.
11 The Lord will guide you continually,
giving you water when you are dry
and restoring your strength.
You will be like a well-watered garden,
like an ever-flowing spring.
12 Some of you will rebuild the deserted ruins of your cities.
Then you will be known as a rebuilder of walls
and a restorer of homes.

13 “Keep the Sabbath day holy.
Don’t pursue your own interests on that day,
but enjoy the Sabbath
and speak of it with delight as the Lord’s holy day.
Honor the Sabbath in everything you do on that day,
and don’t follow your own desires or talk idly.
14 Then the Lord will be your delight.
I will give you great honor
and satisfy you with the inheritance I promised to your ancestor Jacob.
I, the Lord, have spoken!” Isaiah 58

Please join us for our annual day of prayer and fasting on Monday, November 24.
Today our story is from the life of King David. David had taken another man's wife while the husband was away and had s*x with her and she had become pregnant. To cover up his adultery he had the husband killed and then took the woman as his wife. Now the baby of this illicit relationship is born and the Prophet Nathan has visited King David with a judgement from God that the child will die. And so we pick up the story. (If your not familiar with the story I encourage you to read it 2 Samuel 11-12)

"Then David confessed to Nathan, 'I have sinned against the Lord.'
Nathan replied, 'Yes, but the Lord has forgiven you, and you won’t die for this sin. Nevertheless, because you have shown utter contempt for the word of the Lord by doing this, your child will die.'

After Nathan returned to his home, the Lord sent a deadly illness to the child of David and Uriah’s wife. David begged God to spare the child. He went without food and lay all night on the bare ground. The elders of his household pleaded with him to get up and eat with them, but he refused.

Then on the seventh day the child died. David’s advisers were afraid to tell him. 'He wouldn’t listen to reason while the child was ill,' they said. 'What drastic thing will he do when we tell him the child is dead?'" 1 Samuel 12:13-18

Rather than defending himself David acknowledges His sin and seeks repentance when confronted. He humbles himself before the Lord and intercedes for his newborn child. Following seven days of prayer and fasting the child dies.

While it may seem a setback to us David responds by getting up and eating and then comforting his wife. It is likely that he writes Psalm 1 during or immediately after this season of prayer and fasting. God does answer prayer but not always in the way we desire. God's ways are higher than ours and we can always trust that He is working things for our good.

God did bless David with another child soon after who would grow up to be the wisest king who ever ruled over Israel! So fast and pray and see what God will do even when it doesn't go the way you think it should.

"When Jesus saw that the people came running together, He rebuked the unclean spirit, saying to it, 'Deaf and dumb spirit, I command you, come out of him and enter him no more!' Then the spirit cried out, convulsed him greatly, and came out of him. And he became as one dead, so that many said, 'He is dead.' But Jesus took him by the hand and lifted him up, and he arose.
And when He had come into the house, His disciples asked Him privately, 'Why could we not cast it out?'
So He said to them, 'This kind can come out by nothing but prayer and fasting.'"

Earlier in Jesus' ministry he had gathered the disciples and given them power to cast out demons. Now they had come across a demon they could not cast out. Perhaps they had not stayed in close connection with God and his power had been removed from them. Jesus reminds them that they must stay connected with the heavenly Father through "Prayer and Fasting" if they are to have God's power to cast out demons.

We too may have victory over evil habits and demons by the developing a strong relationship with our God. This connection comes through Bible study, fasting and prayer. Please join us for a special day of prayer and fasting on Monday, November 24.

Would you like to have clear direction from God on major decisions you make? The leaders of the church in Antioch were "worshipping the Lord and fasting". During there worship the Holy Spirit spoke to them telling them to appoint Barnabas and Saul (later called Paul) as missionaries. This pivotal turning point in the early church marks the first missionary journey of the great evangelists Paul and Barnabas across the Roman empire. This miraculous intervention by God may not have happened had they not been fasting and worshipping. Paul and Barnabas go on to be some of the greatest missionaries of all time!

When Jesus was eight days old the scripture tells us that Mary and Joseph brought Jesus to the temple in Jerusalem to be "dedicated to the Lord". During this first visit of Jesus to the temple several miracles occur. Here's one of them. Led by the Holy Spirit, Anna, who is described as a prophetess, identifies the infant Jesus as the Messiah! It's nothing short of a miracle that she would choose Jesus out of the hundreds of first born infant sons brought to Jerusalem each month. Isaiah states "...There was nothing beautiful or majestic about his appearance, nothing to attract us to him." (Isaiah 53:2b)
