Over the past decade, the Order’s evangelization efforts in South Korea have seen remarkable growth, with Knights working to establish a presence in each of the country’s 16 dioceses. Today, the Church celebrates the feast of the Korean martyrs — 103 men, women and children who died for their faith in the first decades of Christianity in Korea, beginning in 1791 and continuing through the 19th century. A new wave of martyrs were killed for their faith during the Korean War in 1950, and in 2022, the cause for canonization was opened for 81 of these modern martyrs. Three of these martyrs were U.S.-born priests — Maryknoll Bishop Patrick J. Byrne and Columban missionaries Msgr. Patrick Brennan and Father James Maginn — whose presence in Korea underscored the Church’s international character.

Deacon Candidates and Wives Hold Day of Recollection in Yigo
---
YIGO, Guam — On Saturday, September 20, 2025, deacon candidates and their wives gathered at Our Lady of Lourdes Social Hall in Yigo for a day of recollection, guided by Archbishop Ryan Jimenez. The event served as an opportunity for spiritual renewal and reflection on the mission of the diaconate within the life of the Church.

The morning opened with a prayer led by the Archbishop, setting a reverent tone for the day. He then presented on the theme of synodality, highlighting the vital role deacons play in fostering communion, participation, and mission in the Church. His reflections emphasized the importance of service, unity, and walking together in faith.

Assisting in the program was Sister Orlean Pereda, RSM, from the Sisters of Mercy, who facilitated a breakout session with the wives.

The recollection concluded with a spirit of fellowship and renewed commitment to the diaconal vocation, leaving candidates and their spouses encouraged in their journey of faith and service.
