APRIL 13 9:30 PM UPDATE:
Super Typhoon Sinlaku continues moving west-northwest toward the Mariana Islands, bringing heavy rain, strong winds, and dangerous conditions across the region.
As of 9 p.m., the National Weather Service reported the storm was about 190 miles east of Guam, with maximum sustained winds of 175 mph.
Warnings remain in effect
Current alerts across the region include:
• Typhoon Warning: Rota, Tinian, and Saipan
• Tropical Storm Warning and Typhoon Watch: Guam
• Tropical Storm Warning: Pagan and Alamagan
• Tropical Storm Watch: Agrihan
A flood watch is also in effect for Guam and the Northern Marianas, with the risk of flash flooding increasing.
Storm conditions already starting
Outer rain bands from Sinlaku are already reaching the islands, bringing:
• Heavy rain
• Thunderstorms
• Strong winds
Officials say tropical storm-force winds are already occurring or expected very soon.
Storm path and strength
The Joint Typhoon Warning Center continues to track the storm moving:
• North of Rota
• Near or over Tinian and Saipan
Sinlaku is expected to gradually weaken but still remain a Category 4 or 5 typhoon as it passes through the region.
Residents told to shelter now
Officials say the time to prepare has ended, and residents should already be in a safe location.
People are advised to:
• Stay inside a strong, reinforced building
• Remain indoors until the government gives the all clear
• Avoid all travel
Conditions expected to last
Due to the size of the storm, tropical storm-force winds could continue through Wednesday evening.
Officials stress that conditions will remain dangerous and residents should continue to monitor updates and follow all emergency guidance.
