Opposition-appointed commissioner on the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM), Vincent Alexander, does not believe that the Secretariat is in a state of complete readiness for the holding of free and fair elections.

During a recent interview with Guyana Standard, Alexander said that a number of requests made by opposition-appointed commissioners have been ignored or voted against by government commissioners and the Chair, Justice (ret’d) Claudette Singh. He said that as a result of their petitions being cast aside, a number of measures that ought to be in place are not.

C.N Sharma and wife endorse PPP/C for second term

Well-known host of talk show, Voice of the People, and political party founder and leader of the Justice for All Party (JFAP), C.N. Sharma, along with his wife, Savitree Sharma, publicly endorsed President Irfaan Ali and the PPP/C government for a second term in office. A statement to this effect was issued moments ago.

The Sharmas’ alignment with the PPP/C began in 2020, when their party, JFAP, broke away from the then-governing APNU coalition. At that time, JFAP accepted the results of the 2020 General Elections and the subsequent recount, acknowledging the PPP/C as the rightful winner and calling for the swift swearing-in of Irfaan Ali as President.

Citizens can expect the We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) manifesto to be made public “very soon, very shortly.” This was stated by the party’s General Secretary, Duarte Hetsberger, at a press conference on Tuesday night.

The party’s Campaign Manager, Odessa Primus noted that with the 2025 General and Regional Elections fast approaching, the party will be hosting its rally and releasing its details of the manifesto which promises to deliver improved governance and a better quality of life for all.

“We are going to be reaching out to the media in the not-so-distant future to ensure that we invite all of you — not only to witness the launch of our manifesto, but to be part of the excitement as you capture it for the purpose of sharing with the general public,” she added.

During a recent interview, the longest-serving commissioner on the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM), Vincent Alexander, told Guyana Standard that he holds himself out as a constitutional office holder, with a mandate to serve the electorate for the national good. Alexander said that he, like the others sitting on the commission in representation of the opposition—Charles Corbin and Desmond Trotman—do not take instructions from any political party.
Instead, they use their seats on the commission to advocate for what is needed to facilitate the holding of credible elections.

Alexander said that, unlike their stance, the posture assumed by government-appointed commissioners is quite different. He said two government-nominated commissioners remain members of the People’s Progressive Party/Civic Central Committee and have not shied away from making it known that they follow party directives.

When Guyana Standard spoke with government-nominated commissioner Sase Gunraj, his account was totally contrary. Gunraj defended the stance taken by those on his side. Further, he said Alexander and others clearly acted in the interest of party during the 2020 elections saga.

In Guyana, some folks can afford to splurge US$5000 on a yacht to cruise the Demerara River. Others can barely afford a tray of eggs, the cost of which has moved from $1500 to $2400. This is the stark reality of the haves and have-nots, a reality which the A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) wants to change in this oil-rich nation says the party’s Prime Ministerial Candidate, Juretha Fernandes.
