On Saturday, Agriculture Minister Hon. Zulfikar Mustapha commissioned a rehabilitated 200-cusec pump at the Montrose Pump Station on the East Coast of Demerara.

With an investment valued at approximately $226.7 million, Minister Mustapha said that over 3,549 acres of land, including 920 households and approximately 400 acres of residential area will benefit.

He further stated that the pump station’s additional drainage capacity forms part of the government’s broader development agenda.

“Pump stations such as these aid in our overall goal of Rural Revitalization and Agricultural Diversification, designed to increase farmers' incomes. The investments we are making today lay a solid foundation for a thriving agricultural sector that will contribute significantly to our nation's economic prosperity for years to come,” he explained.

Areas such as Success, Mon Repos, Better Hope, Vryheid's Lust, and Plaisance will now benefit from improved D&I services.

Since taking office in 2020, the government’s investment in drainage and irrigation enhancement has increased by 760%, from $8.4 billion in 2019 to $72.3 billion in 2024.

Public spirited neighbours at Westbury Village, Jonestown Essequibo Coast, on Friday, January 31, 2025, used a bucket brigade and saved the home of 71-year-old Selena Biedder from being completely destroyed by fire.

Firefighters responded to the fire call at approximately 13:26 hrs but on arrival the fire was extinguished by public spirited neighbours.

The fire supposedly caused by a makeshift drop cord with slack connection that sparked and ignited nearby combustible materials, resulted in the damage of the northeast- ern side walls of the house, together with household items such as a 2x 1m walldrobe, two full size mattresses, and three window curtains.

The one flat concrete property which measures 15m X 12m, was occupied by the owner, Selena Biedder age 71, Keisha Payne age 21, Eon Marks age 37, Kerry Biedder age 20, Seon Payne age 18, Jermaine Williams age 15, Annializa Marks age 8. Alisha Torrenton age 12, and Emily Torrenton age 16. However, no life was lost in the fire.

The Guyana Fire Service is calling on the public to ensure that correct extension cords are utilized in homes, to alleviate occurrences of electrical fires, and to desist from overloading electrical sockets and power strips in homes.

Berbice couple claims friend they offer shelter allegedly ran away with over $1M

A couple residing in Berbice is asserting that a long-time acquaintance, whom they graciously offered shelter, has allegedly absconded with a sum exceeding $1 million.

In a recent interview with the Guyana Daily News, Herman Ali, a 75-year-old resident of Lot 67, Rose Hall Town, Region Six, recounted the events leading to this alarming situation. He described his friend, George Sanders or Randolph Sanders, as someone he has known for several years.

On Sunday, January 23, 2025, when Sanders found himself without accommodation, Ali and his 74-year-old wife, Koontie Johnnie, permitted him to stay in a room on the upper floor of their residence while they occupied the lower flat.

As per Ali's statements, it was customary for Sanders to join him and Johnnie in their social gatherings on the lower floor.

Johnnie disclosed that she had kept a substantial amount of money securely stored in a purse to use to address their medical expenses.

On the afternoon of Wednesday, January 29, Johnnie recounted that she had left her purse containing the funds on a chair to use the washroom. Upon her return, she discovered that the purse was missing, and a search for Sanders yielded no results.

Johnnie stated that she attempted to contact Sanders on his cellphone without success. She suspects he may have stolen the money due to his abrupt disappearance and failure to respond to calls.

She noted that her husband had returned home after the incident happened.

The incident has been reported to the Rose Hall Town Police Station.

"I am asking the Police and the public to assist us in locating him. We need our money back," Ali said.

"Dear Commissioners,

I am Ameir Ahmad, a businessman operating in Guyana for over ten years; I currently employ hundreds of Guyanese of all ethnicities and religious persuasions without prejudice.

It is against this background that i am making a formal complaint against Mr. Terrence Campbell who responded to a post made on Social Media platform (Facebook) by calling me directly (from a blocked number).

On that call Mr. Campbell called me " a racist coolie dog" repeatedly and threatened my life "you will find out why they say the only good coolie is a dead one when they plant you six feet under." this threat has been reported to the Guyana Police Force.

The use of the derogative term coolie' has caused me great distress and the threats have upset me and my family which includes my young children. I urge your greatest attention as labeling me as racist can have a detrimental impact on my various business enterprises, for example, workers of a particular ethnicity may well stop applying for jobs within my businesses and this can have a 'knock-on' effect of ethnic imbalances in my workforce and the appearance of discrimination on my part. I reiterate that hundreds of Guyanese of ALL ethnicities are employed without prejudice in my various enterprises.

Terrence Campbell Local businessman sues Campbell for defamation

Local businessman Ameir Ahmad has sued Terrence Campbell for defamation. The local businessman alleges he has known Campbell for several years and has never had any problems with him. However, he noticed that Campbell now seems to be involved in politics in Guyana.

Ahmad says he was surprised to see Campbell make multiple posts on his page referring to him.

Ahmad, in his defamation suit, alleges that Campbell falsely accused him of defrauding the Guyana Revenue Authority. The accusation and the associated negative inferences are totally false. Ahmad alleges the defamatory statements of Campbell have caused him loss and damage.

PPP fake supporter Roshan Khan Snr endorses Simona Broomes

Just one hour after Guyana Daily News revealed that Roshan Khan Snr was a fake PPP supporter he publicly endorsed Simon Broomes, who now heads a new political party, Assembly for Liberty and Prosperity (ALP), which was this afternoon launched.

"IN THE RAW: CONGRATULATIONS TO SISTER SIMONA BROOMS. BLESSINGS AND GOOD LUCK TO YOU......Definitely you can [win a] few seats!!!," Khan said in his Facebook post.

While Khan has publicly declared his support for AFC’s Simona Broomes ‘new’ political party, we are reliably informed his son, Rosh Khan Jr. continues to (falsely) represent himself as a conduit to President Irfaan Ali; Rosh Jr. has allegedly collected significant sums of money from a plethora of businessmen (locally and internationally) and never delivered on the promised meetings or outcomes.

And now, let's turn our attention to the "Land Saga"

Did you know that the Lenora Estates was bought by two brothers, Shareef and Edul 'Ed' Ahmad?

The land was originally bought to develop a wood processing facility. Both brothers contributed 50% each towards purchasing the land.

At that time, which was several years ago, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) had objected to the facility being opened at the said location mainly because it is a residential community.

Now, for the shocker, under the APNU+AFC government, Shareef and Edul Ahmad attained an attorney, who is none other than Roysdale Forde, as the matter went to court.

UNDER the then APNU+AFC government, the land was granted to the brothers for residential purposes.

In fact, the PPP government was against this, but the brothers were granted the land by the previous administration, anyway.

The opposition same opposition that granted the land to the brothers back then is only barking now because it's an election year.

Both the previous and current administrations granted lands and permits, so why the sudden noise now, on the "Edul Ed Ahmad Land Saga."

Make it make sense, please.

IN THE RAW ROSHAN KHAN TO BE SLAPPED WITH $50M LAWSUIT, Did Roshan Khan switch to the opposition? Why is he bashing the lands and Government?

So-called Dr. Roshan Khan Snr and owner of RK's Security Services, to be slapped with a $50 million lawsuit by businessman Ameir Ahmad.

Khan accused the businessman on Friday of partnering with Edul 'Ed' Ahmad in illegal land and other deals, among other things.

Khan, despite being in the security sector for over 30 years, failed to acquire what the young businessman has accomplished. As a result, he has been repeatedly attacking Ameir Ahmad, which displays a clear sign of jealousy.

Khan, to stay relevant, fabricates lies and airs them on his show titled, "In the Raw," rather than paying money owed to his workers and giving them the decent treatment they deserve.

Cyrus Williams, a 71-year-old resident of Sophia, was never paid and was treated horribly by Khan while employed with him, and this is not alleged; it is facts. Williams was employed with the security service for three years and was owed 5 weeks of his monies; the pensioner had also engaged the Ministry of Labour to assist in the matter.

Williams, although making repeated efforts to recover the money owed to him, Khan has been dodging, ignoring and mistreating the 71-year-old.

Two other guards were fired for exposing the maltreatment employees faced by RK's Security Services, and these are just the tip of the iceberg.

You don't hear Khan talking about these issues.

Now, he's busy working round the clock with opposition to disgrace the government and hard-working individuals.

At about 19:00hrs last evening, Police ranks from the Timehri Police Station acted on information received and went to Lot 1 Land of Canaan, East Bank Demerara, where a search was conducted for Wanted fugitive Ronald Balgobin, who was found hiding under a bed. Two other persons at the address were also arrested for the offence of Harbouring a Wanted Person.

Police last week issued a WANTED BULLETIN for Ronald Balgobin, a 31-year-old taxi driver from Linden, who is wanted for questioning into the alleged abduction of Basmattie 'Penny' Bassant, a 37-year-old housewife residing at Annandale, East Coast Demerara. The incident reportedly occurred on October 27, 2024, at approximately 10:00 hrs at Annandale, ECD.
