Roraima Airways Slashes Hinterland Airfares by 7%, Pioneering Cost Cuts Across All Upgraded Airstrips โœˆ๏ธ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡พ

In a move hailed as a major win for hinterland travelers, Roraima Airways announced an immediate 7% reduction in airfares to all recently rehabilitated airstrips, becoming the first airline in Guyana to extend cost reductions across every upgraded runway โ€” not just selected routes.
The decision follows President Dr. Irfaan Aliโ€™s call for the aviation sector to support hinterland communities, alongside the Governmentโ€™s ongoing investments to modernize airstrips across Regions One, Seven, Eight, and Nine, with 11 more airstrips nearing completion.

According to the airline, the improved runway conditions have reduced aircraft wear, maintenance exposure, and operational risk โ€” savings now being passed directly to passengers.

Director of Aviation, Capt. Gerry Gouveia Jr., said the fare cut reflects a clear private sector responsibility to respond to public investment with tangible action. He confirmed that the 7% reduction will automatically apply to every new or rehabilitated airstrip as they come online.

The announcement coincides with international recognition of Guyanaโ€™s aviation safety progress, including an 80% ICAO audit score and the countryโ€™s adoption of an ICAO-aligned Next Generation of Aviation Professionals (NGAP) programme.
While noting the Presidentโ€™s 15% airfare reduction target, Roraima Airways described its 7% cut as a sustainable first step, with further reductions expected as operational efficiencies continue to improve.

ERC Probing Alleged Racial Remarks by Nazar Mohamed

The Ethnic Relations Commission (ERC) has launched an investigation into alleged racial remarks reportedly made by businessman Nazar Mohamed, following the circulation of a video on social media.

In a statement issued on Friday, January 9, the ERC said its Media Monitoring Unit (MMU) took note of the video on January 8, 2026, which contains statements that have raised public concern.

According to the Commission, the remarks in question have been captured and formally recorded as part of the MMUโ€™s continuous monitoring mandate.

The ERC emphasized that any comments which promote ethnic hostility, prejudice, or discrimination fall squarely within the scope of its constitutional responsibilities.
The matter has since been referred to the Commissionโ€™s Investigative Unit, which is currently examining the issue in accordance with established protocols that uphold due process and fairness.

The ERC said the public will be kept informed as the investigation progresses, reaffirming its commitment to fostering harmony, mutual respect, and peaceful coexistence among all ethnic groups in Guyana.

21-Year-Old Bagotstown Welder Crushed to Death by Motor Lorry on East Bank Demerara

A 21-year-old Bagotstown welder was killed on Friday morning after he was struck and crushed by a motor lorry along the Bagotstown Public Road, East Bank Demerara, in yet another deadly traffic incident on the corridor.

The victim has been identified as Jeremiah Shameem, also known as โ€œNicholas,โ€ of Bagotstown. He had celebrated his 21st birthday just over a week ago, on December 31.

Relatives said Shameem was travelling by bicycle to his uncleโ€™s home, located across the village, where he worked as a welder. He had reportedly been assisting his uncle in the trade since the age of 17.

According to police, the fatal accident occurred at approximately 10:30h near an intersection. Investigators said Shameem was waiting to cross the roadway when a motor lorry attempted to negotiate the intersection and collided with the cyclist.

The impact reportedly caused Shameem to fall and become trapped beneath the rear wheel of the vehicle. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the motor lorry has since been arrested and is assisting police with their investigations as inquiries continue into the circumstances surrounding the tragic incident.

TikTok Personality โ€œTikTok Uncleโ€ Reshie Mangal Arrested, Released on $100,000 Bail

Popular TikTok personality Reshie Mangal, widely known online as โ€œTikTok Uncle,โ€ was arrested by police on Wednesday evening and released on $100,000 bail on Thursday morning, sparking public debate and strong reactions from his supporters.

Mangalโ€™s arrest quickly gained attention on social media, particularly after a viral video shared by entertainer Elsa Lisa, showing supporters gathering and calling for his release. In the video, supporters argued that Mangal had cooperated fully with authorities and posed no threat, insisting he had not engaged in violent behaviour.

The arrest is believed to be connected to a notice issued by the Ethnic Relations Commission (ERC), which named Mangal as a person of interest and requested that he contact the agency. However, officials have not publicly disclosed the specific matter under investigation.

According to the ERC, the notice was issued after three or more unsuccessful attempts were made to contact the individuals listed. In addition to Mangal, the notice also named Tyrese Algernon and Orlando Xavier Ferreira, urging them to urgently make contact with the Commission regarding matters currently under review.

While Mangal has since been released on bail, questions remain surrounding the circumstances that led to his arrest and the nature of the ERCโ€™s interest in the case. His supporters continue to call for transparency and clarity from the authorities as the situation develops.

No further court dates or charges have been publicly detailed at this time.

Vendor Granted $20,000 Bail After Alleged Assault on International Travel Vlogger Near La Penitence Market

A 29-year-old Georgetown vendor accused of slapping an international travel vlogger near the La Penitence Market was granted $20,000 bail on Friday when he appeared before Chief Magistrate (ag) Faith McGusty at the Georgetown Magistratesโ€™ Courts.

The accused, Kwesi McKay, of Lot 7 Fourth Street, Kingston, Georgetown, who operates a vending business at the corner of Water and Cowan Streets, faces two charges stemming from an incident on January 5 near the entrance to the La Penitence Market.

McKay pleaded not guilty to using assaultive language likely to cause a breach of the peace and to unlawfully assaulting Anthony Dโ€™Oliveira, an international travel vlogger, at the same time and location.
Prosecutionโ€™s Case

The prosecution opposed bail, raising concerns about public safety. Prosecutors told the court that Dโ€™Oliveira, a visitor to Guyana and a well-known YouTuber, was filming in the area when he was unexpectedly slapped on the back of the head.

Police allege that McKay then verbally abused the vlogger, including making offensive remarks about his mother. The prosecution said it intends to rely on video footage of the incident, which circulated widely on social media, along with Dโ€™Oliveiraโ€™s interview, to support its case.
Defenceโ€™s Account

In his defence, McKay told the court that he had just emptied a bin at the La Penitence Market when Dโ€™Oliveira approached him with a camera. He claimed he twice asked the vlogger not to film him and requested that the camera not be pointed in his face.
McKay said he then moved toward the market entrance with another man who later appeared in the viral video.

Despite his objections, he alleged that the filming continued, prompting a reaction that was captured on camera. He insisted he had no intention to assault the vlogger and felt provoked by the repeated filming.
Magistrateโ€™s Ruling

In her remarks, Magistrate McGusty acknowledged that recording someone without their consent can be culturally offensive, noting that in some communities there are beliefs that cameras can โ€œsteal oneโ€™s soul.โ€ However, she made it clear that such concerns do not justify physical violence.

โ€œIf someone tells you not to record them, you should not continue pointing the camera in their face,โ€ the magistrate said, while also stressing that the vloggerโ€™s status as a visitor did not grant special entitlement or excuse McKayโ€™s actions.

After considering submissions from both sides, the court granted $10,000 bail on each charge, totaling $20,000, and imposed a bond to keep the peace. Magistrate McGusty noted that the two men reside in different areas and countries, reducing any immediate public safety risk, and cautioned McKay to exercise restraint in the future.
The matter has been adjourned to January 20 for further proceedings.
Official Response

The charges followed the issuance of a police wanted bulletin for McKay shortly after the incident went viral.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Tourism, Industry and Commerce and the Guyana Tourism Authority condemned the assault on the international visitor, describing the incident as wholly unacceptable and inconsistent with Guyanaโ€™s values of hospitality and respect. Both agencies pledged full cooperation with law enforcement and reaffirmed their commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of all visitors to Guyana.

FROM FIRELINES TO TIMELINES: HOW โ€œPROFESSOR MOOREโ€ TURNED PAIN INTO PURPOSE.

On any given day, Isaiah Moore may be rushing toward danger as a firefighter. On social media, he runs toward something just as urgent: hope. Known to thousands as Professor Moore, the 27 year old entrepreneur and influencer has become a familiar face not just for his online presence, but for his generosity, resilience, and unwavering commitment to community upliftment.

Born and raised in Vryheid Lust on the east coast, Moore is the eldest of four siblings. His early life was shaped by responsibility and resilience, growing up under the care of his grandmother and mother. That foundation, however, was shaken in 2020 when he lost his mother, a loss that sent him into a deep depression and changed the course of his life. Isaiah started making tik tok as a way to escape depression.

What began as a way to distract himself from grief slowly evolved into a platform for connection. Through humor, motivation, and authenticity, Moore found an audience that resonated with his story. More importantly, he found purpose. As his following grew, so did his vision, one rooted in memories from his own childhood.
Moore vividly remembers what it felt like to be left out during the holidays. As a child, there were moments when donors would arrive in the community to distribute gifts and hampers. Too often, he and his siblings would miss out.

True to his word, Professor Moore began giving back, sharing money, food hampers, and gifts with families in need, starting in his own community. What makes his generosity stand out is not just the act itself, but the intention behind it. For Moore, giving is personal.

Today, Moore balances multiple roles as firefighter, entrepreneur, influencer, and community advocate but his message remains consistent. Using his platform, he is actively calling on and urging other entrepreneurs, business owners and private sector leaders to give back to the communities that raised them. Moore believes that meaningful change does not require massive wealth; even the smallest contribution, he says, can have a lasting impact when placed in the right hands.

From battling fires to confronting social inequality in small but meaningful ways, Isaiah Mooreโ€™s story is one of resilience, empathy, and action. As his influence continues to grow, so too does his commitment to ensuring that success is measured not by personal gain, but by how much is given back to others.

MURDERS UP 11%, TRAFFIC FATALITIES JUMP 41% IN 2025; POLICE DATA SHOWS.

Guyana closed out 2025 facing a grim reality: more lives were lost to violence and road crashes than in the year before, marking a sharp reversal in public safety gains. Final statistics released by the Guyana Police Force (GPF) reveal a troubling rise in both murders and traffic-related deaths, underscoring a dual crisis that touched communities from city streets to rural highways.

According to the GPFโ€™s verified year-end data, 130 murders were recorded in 2025 an 11 percent increase over the 117 killings reported in 2024. The rise signals a renewed escalation in lethal violence after a modest decline the previous year. Crime monitors attribute much of the increase to domestic-related homicides and shootings linked to criminal networks.

The toll on the nationโ€™s roads was even more severe. Police documented 124 serious traffic accidents that claimed 137 lives during the year. In contrast, 2024 recorded 97 road fatalities, meaning traffic deaths jumped by roughly 41 percent year-on-year. The spike has renewed concern about reckless driving, speeding, and deteriorating road safety conditions nationwide.

Together, the figures paint 2025 as a year marked by heightened danger both from interpersonal violence and from everyday travel creating a compounded public safety challenge across Guyana.

The GPF emphasized that the statistics were released only after a formal process of compilation, verification, and approval to ensure accuracy. While provisional trends were mentioned during a Christmas policing briefing in November 2025, officials noted that the year had not yet been formally closed at that time and all data required final reconciliation.

Beyond the headline numbers, analysts and civil-society groups point to deeper warning signs within the data: increased firearm use during confrontations, persistent high-speed and reckless driving often on poorly lit roads and shortcomings in emergency medical response that can turn survivable incidents into fatalities.
With the numbers now confirmed, attention is shifting from counting the dead to preventing further loss. Policymakers, law enforcement, and communities are being pressed to confront hard questions about enforcement, infrastructure, and social intervention as Guyana looks toward 2026

The Guyana Police Force says it remains committed to transparency and to providing reliable data to inform strategies aimed at reducing crime and improving road safety in the year ahead.

The Guyana Police Force has intensified enforcement against dangerous driving, with multiple motorists charged, fined, and brought before the courts this week following offences captured by traffic cameras, including speeding and third-lane violations.

These actions form part of the continued rollout of the Safe Road Intelligent System (SRIS), deployed in partnership between the National Data Management Authority (NDMA) and Guyana Police Force, which utilises automated cameras and data-driven monitoring to identify traffic breaches and support enforcement actions through the courts.

On Wednesday, January 7, 2026, several drivers appeared at the Sparendaam Magistrateโ€™s Court #2 and the Georgetown Magistrateโ€™s Court #7 to answer charges of Dangerous Driving. The matters were heard by Her Worship Ms. Abigail Gibbs and Her Worship Ms. S. Lallram, respectively.

Before Her Worship Ms. Abigail Gibbs:
โ€ข Junior McKenzie, driver of minibus BAF 6744, was charged with two counts of Dangerous Driving and fined $100,000.
โ€ข Orin Harper, driver of minibus BPP 3825, faced two counts of Dangerous Driving and was fined $100,000.
โ€ข Hemraj Ramfal, driver of minibus BAE 7621, pleaded not guilty and was granted bail of $150,000. The matter was adjourned to February 26, 2026, for statements.
โ€ข Haraish Looknauth (BAC 2361), Cylus Gibson (BAE 3131), Mike McGarrell (BAJ 4071), and Keshav Lachman (BAH 8423) were each fined $50,000 for Dangerous Driving.

Several matters were adjourned due to the absence of defendants, including those involving Odinga McDonald, Dasrat Mirchand, and Kelvin Hardy, all drivers of minibuses. These cases were rescheduled for February 3, 2026.

Before Her Worship Ms. S. Lallram:
โ€ข Trevor Peters (BZZ 9177) and Mahadeo Mangra (BAM 3367) were each fined $50,000 or 10 weeksโ€™ imprisonment.
โ€ข Leroy Jonas, driver of minibus BAL 5912, faced two counts of Dangerous Driving and was fined $100,000 or 20 weeksโ€™ imprisonment. His driverโ€™s licence was suspended for six months.

Two defendants, Hensley Alleyne (BAC 8810) and Raymond Clement (BAK 1075), were absent when their matters were called.

The Traffic Department have also indicated that additional cases relating to unpaid speeding tickets detected through the SRIS traffic camera system are expected to come before the courts. Motorists are reminded that failure to attend court when summoned may result in further legal consequences, including the issuance of warrants.

The Traffic Department reiterated that dangerous driving, including third-lane violations and offences detected via traffic cameras, puts lives at risk and will be met with firm action. Motorists are urged to obey traffic laws, respect lane discipline, and drive responsibly.
