PRESS RELEASE - GECOM Approves Nineteen (19) Symbols Submitted by Political Parties to Contest in General and Regional Elections

1st July, 2025 GEORGETOWN – The Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) has approved nineteen (19) of the twenty-two (22) symbols submitted by political parties to contest in the upcoming General and Regional Elections. However, final approval of the remaining three (3) symbols would be subject to minor modifications, the nature of which is in the process of being communicated to them.

Importantly, GECOM takes this opportunity to clarify that although twenty-four (24) symbols were initially submitted to the Commission, two of those political parties have since joined the A Partnership for National Unity (APNU); resulting in the symbols being included within the partnership.

In view of the foregoing, GECOM reaffirms its commitment to continuous engagement with all political parties as they prepare their Lists of Candidates for submission on Nomination Day which would be held on the 14th July, 2025.

A list of the Political Parties and their respective approval status is attached for reference.

⏰: Search Operation Underway for Missing Youths at Unity Beach, Mahaica

The Honourable Minister of Home Affairs, Mr. Robeson Benn, is currently at Unity Beach, Mahaica, East Coast Demerara, where an extensive search operation is underway for Navin Seenauth, age 20, and Daniel Boodram, age 17, both residents of Unity Village.

Reports indicate that Seenauth, Boodram, and another friend, Joshua Deonarine, a 17-year-old from the same village, went swimming at the Unity beach. Deonarine stated that the water was inshore with heavy waves upon their arrival. Despite the conditions, the youths proceeded to swim. Deonarine, who cannot swim, exited the water after approximately half an hour since the water was about chest height. After getting dressed, he noticed his friends were no longer visible in the water. He searched for them but to no avail and subsequently returned to the village to raise an alarm.

In a united effort to locate the missing youths, a search party was immediately formed and is actively ongoing, with members of the community participating in the search operation.

The Guyana Police Force is on-site conducting an investigation, and the Coast Guard will be deployed at first light to assist in the search efforts.

Authorities urge anyone with information which could assist in locating the missing youths to come forward.

The community's support and cooperation are not just important, but also greatly appreciated during this critical time.

Enterprise man died after being stabbed during scuffle

Police are investigating an alleged murder committed on Trevoltor Mangal, a 25-year-old Labourer from Enterprise, East Coast Demerara, which occurred at about 19:00 hrs last evening at Park Street, Enterprise, by three male suspects.

Trevoltor's mother, Nalanie Chand, a 61-year-old Housewife of Gandhi Street Enterprise, told investigators that at about 17:00 hrs yesterday, her son left home wearing a cream-colour jersey and short brown pants.

It is alleged that at about 18:30 hrs, Trevoltor entered a bar in Park Street Enterprise where he purchased a beer and sat outside the bar. About ten minutes later, the three suspects came to the bar, went to a pool table, and began a game pool. All three suspects are frequent customers at the mentioned bar.

The Bartender claimed to have overheard Trevoltor arguing with one of the three suspects over a motorcycle. Shortly after, the three suspects left, heading West on Park Street, and Trevoltor subsequently followed.

At about 19:00 hrs, residents standing in front of PlayLand Restaurant observed the three suspects running from the southern direction, chasing Trevoltor. They caught up with Trevoltor, and a 'scuffle' occurred. Trevoltor managed to escape his attackers and ran East through Forbes Street towards the bar -- with the three suspects chasing him.

Trevoltor ran and stood in front of the bar on the road and called out to the bartender, after which he collapsed and lost consciousness.

The suspects, seeing Trevoltor collapse, escaped the scene.

Trevoltor was picked up by a Police mobile anti-crime patrol in an unconscious state.

His body was examined, and a single stab wound to the chest was observed. He was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where he was seen by a Doctor on duty and pronounced dead on arrival.

The body was taken to the GPHC, awaiting a Post-Mortem Examination.

Several people were questioned, which led to the information of the suspects' names. They are yet to be arrested.

Shack Destroyed by Illegal Electrical Connection

At 11:11 hrs, the Fire Service was contacted concerning a blaze in the East Ruimveldt Squatting Area, Georgetown.

Firefighting units arrived on the scene at 11:13 hrs, and the first water jet was deployed at 11:14 hrs.
Responding to the call were Water Tender #95, Water Tender #118, and Water Carrier #18, carrying a total of 6,434 liters of water, along with thirteen firefighters.

The fire engulfed a one-flat wooden building owned and occupied by Brandon Britton, 39. Unfortunately, the building and its contents were completely destroyed, rendering Mr. Britton homeless.

The purported cause of the fire was identified as a slack connection of illegal wiring, which resulted in arcing and sparking, subsequently igniting nearby combustible materials.

Additionally, the fire affected a neighboring one-flat wooden building owned by Ruby Francis, 39, who lives there with her family of eight. Due to radiated heat, the entire western external wall of the building was destroyed.

Firefighting efforts included one jet working from WT #118's tank supply, one jet from WC #18's tank supply, and one jet from WT #95's tank supply. Light Pumps and also contributed by utilizing an open water source to extinguish the fire.

The Guyana Fire Service continues to warn citizens to desist from using illegal connections for electricity.
These connections present a serious risk to both life and property since they could cause fires or electrocutions.

Fire at Sophia Claims Life of 4-Year-Old

At 15:59 hrs today, the Fire Service received a call regarding a fire at Lot 88, C Field, Sophia, Greater Georgetown.

Firefighters arrived on the scene at 16:06 hrs and deployed the first jet at 16:07 hrs. The responding units included Water Tenders #105, #118 and Water Carrier #18 from the Campbellville Fire Station and Fire Service Headquarters along with a total of eleven personnel on site.

The one-flat wooden and concrete building was owned by 42-year-old Nigel Anderson which he occupied with his family, Shonnette Anderson, 37, Michael Anderson, 11, Waveny Anderson, 15, Cynthia Anderson, 6 and Junior Anderson, who tragically did not survive the incident.

The fire resulted in the complete destruction of the building and its contents leaving four persons homeless.

Preliminary investigations suggest that the fire was caused by children playing with matches. The naked flames ignited a mattress, which then set nearby combustible materials on fire, leading to the spread of the flames throughout the building.

Firefighters swiftly extinguished the blaze using two jets from Water Carrier #18 and one jet from Water Tender #105.

Based on information gathered at the scene, three children were left in the care of a teenager. According to the teen, she left the children playing and went to lie down, subsequently falling asleep. The teen reported that she was awakened by one of the children, who told her that the house was on fire. In a panic, she ran out of the house. The Fire Service was contacted, and upon checking, it was discovered that one of the children was unaccounted for. Charred remains were later uncovered by firefighters after the fire was extinguished.

The Guyana Fire Service extends sincere condolences to the parents and other relatives of the young child who lost his life.

In the wake of this tragedy, parents and guardians are reminded to educate children on the dangers of fire starters (matches and lighters) and warn them about their use.

DO NOT leave children unattended or at home without adult supervision.

Keep children away from the cooking area, and ensure matches and lighters are out of their reach at all times.

Remember to equip homes with fire prevention and firefighting devices like smoke detectors and fire extinguishers.
