ATTORNEY-GENERAL and Minister of Legal Affairs Mohabir Anil Nandlall, SC, has reaffirmed that the Government of Guyana remains firmly guided by clear legal precedent and its international obligations, following Wednesday’s ruling by Principal Magistrate Judy Latchman in the ongoing extradition proceedings involving the Mohameds.

Speaking with the News Room after the decision, the attorney general said no “serious lawyer” should be surprised by the magistrate’s refusal to revisit arguments already settled by higher courts.

THE Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI) has assured residents of Chesney, Fyrish, and Kilcoy that it is actively addressing recent concerns about the presence of visible iron sediments in the water supply.

According to GWI, the issue arose following technical challenges at the Chesney Small Water Treatment Plant, where the in-line filtration system required temporary bypassing to carry out essential repairs.

Regional Workshop on the Biological Weapons Convention
in the Caribbean

The Biological Weapons Convention (BWC), established 50 years ago, has Guyana as a signatory since January 3, 1973, and it officially ratified/ acceded to the treaty on March 26, 2013, demonstrating its strong commitment to this important disarmament treaty. Guyana’s National Focal Points for the BWC, Dr Bheri Ramsaran and Dr Sawan Jagnarain, recently represented the country at a regional workshop in Trinidad, held from November 25th to 26th, under the title “Regional workshop on the Biological Weapons Convention in the Caribbean.”

Being a State Party to the BWC is not only a demonstration of adhering to a global norm; it's a profound commitment to international peace and security. It empowers Guyana to actively participate in multilateral efforts to prevent the proliferation of biological weapons, share best practices in biosafety and biosecurity, and contribute to a global framework of trust and transparency. This membership underpins our nation's dedication to the peaceful uses of life sciences and technology, safeguarding public health, and protecting our unique biodiversity.

This intensive two-day session was designed to equip participating nations with the essential knowledge and practical tools needed to prepare comprehensive Confidence-Building Measures (CBMs). CBMs are fundamental pillars of the BWC, serving as voluntary commitments by countries that enhance transparency, foster international trust, and collectively reinforce the global norm against biological weapons.

The BWC reinforces Guyana’s efforts toward various SDGs, including SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being), SDG 5 (Gender Equality), SDG 14 (Life below Water), SDG 15 (Life on Land), and SDG 16 (Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions). This support helps Guyana enhance disease surveillance, improve reporting, strengthen biosafety measures, boost food security, and increase accountability.

Workshops like this are essential for promoting dialogue, exchanging best practices, and developing a shared understanding of the complex issues related to biological threats. We aim to use these new insights to strengthen Guyana's position as a responsible player in global biosecurity and non-proliferation.

I note with deep sadness the passing of Mr Ronald ‘Ron’ Robinson, a towering figure whose voice, discipline, and vision helped shape Guyana’s modern media landscape.

From the start of his broadcasting career in 1965, Ron Robinson set standards that defined professionalism in radio and broadcasting for more than five decades. He was a mentor to generations of announcers, a trainer who believed deeply in preparation and clarity, and a guardian of broadcasting ethics at a time when the media was finding its national voice. His influence extended beyond Guyana through regional training and continuous guidance to broadcasters committed to excellence.

His contribution to cultural broadcasting and the performing arts strengthened the role of media as a vehicle for national identity and storytelling, while his leadership in civic organisations reflected a lifelong commitment to service and youth development. His work leaves a lasting imprint on how Guyana communicates with itself and the world.

It was fitting that he was honoured this year with the Lifetime Achievement Award on the occasion of World Press Freedom Day, hosted by the Department of Information and Public Affairs, Office of the Prime Minister.

On behalf of the Government of Guyana, I extend condolences to his family, colleagues, and the media fraternity. Guyana and the wider Caribbean has lost a pioneer whose legacy will continue to guide the standards and values of our media for generations to come.

Agriculture Minister, Hon. Zulfikar Mustapha, visited the Meadow Bank Wharf this morning to engage fisherfolk on ongoing plans to further enhance the facility. During the visit, the Minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to modernising Guyana’s fisheries infrastructure and improving conditions for the fisherfolk who rely on Meadow Bank as a key landing site.

Minister Mustapha highlighted the the government has expended millions of dollars to execute significant upgrades focused on enhancing its aesthetic appeal for fish vendors and expanding key amenities such as sheds, water points, security, and stalls for traders.

Minister Mustapha noted that these interventions align with President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali’s direction to modernise key agricultural and fisheries infrastructure. Over the past five years, the government has advanced a range of strategic initiatives in the fisheries sector, including deployment of vessel monitoring devices, strengthened enforcement against illegal fishing, and expansion of landing and processing facilities, efforts aimed at boosting productivity, sustainability, and economic opportunities for fisherfolk nationwide.
