GYD$7.5M worth of foreign cannabis was seized during a Customs Anti Narcotics Unit (CANU) operation at Backstreet Grove, East Bank Demerara.

Acting on intelligence received, officers intercepted a male suspect carrying a container, in which fifteen brick-like parcels of foreign cannabis, commonly known as “poppy” or “creepy,” were discovered.

Denzel Crawford, 27, of Grove Housing Scheme, E.B.D., was arrested and escorted to CANU Headquarters along with the narcotics, which weighed 10.760 kilogrammes.

Authorities say this type of cannabis being imported into Guyana carries a significantly high THC content and fetches a premium price in the local market. Investigations are ongoing.

Guyana’s reigning Elite League champions, Slingerz Football Club, continued their preparations for the upcoming Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Club Shield tournament with a commanding 6-1 victory over a Blueberry Hill/Alleys/Valleys/Christianburg combination team on Saturday evening at the Bayroc National Stadium in Linden.

Despite the emphatic scoreline, Slingerz FC Head Coach Jamaal Shabazz made it clear after the match that the outing was never about the result, but rather the continued development of the team’s tactical approach and overall match fitness ahead of July’s regional assignment in Trinidad and Tobago.

Nanan misses century at Bourda!

Former national Under-15 batsman Trilok Nanan fell agonizingly short of a hundred on Sunday when games continued in the Georgetown Cricket Association’s Enline Security Logistics Inc.. Under-17, 50-over competition.

Playing for home side Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC) against GT XI, the right-handed Nanan was stumped for 97 by wicketkeeper Tyrell King as he charged spinner Zahid Talkudar at the start of the 27th over.

Nanan struck 11 fours in his 83-ball knock, which was the foundation of GCC’s 234 all out off 48.3 overs.

After the early loss of Shahid Ramzan for nine, Nanan and left-handed opener Neerav Persaud, who batted patiently for his 48 off 86 balls (1x4), put on 145 runs for the second wicket.

Aaron Persaud (17) and skipper Ravaldo Pereira (11) were the other batters into double-figures as GT XI bowlers controlled the second half of the innings, after GCC looked set for a massive score at 157-1 after 26 overs.

Talkudar picked up 3-38 off 10 overs, while Aditya Khan had 2-25 off six and Ajay Kissoon 2-38 off 6.3 overs.

In reply, GT XI were 23-2 from seven overs when rain cut short the game. Off-spinner Pereira removed Aaron Narine (0) and Ricardo Etwaroo (7), with Kissoon (5*) and King (0*) the not out batters.
