Leroy Glenn Hendricks, a physician from Lethem, Guyana, hails from the Aturayo, Arawak, and Macushi tribes. He graduated from the Latin American School of Medicine and returned to his hometown to serve his community. After specializing he now provides healthcare to his fellow compatriots.
However, he emphasizes the urgent need for healthcare system upgrades and the recruitment of more specialists, including OBGYNs, pediatricians, and surgeons. Despite his efforts, he acknowledges the shortage of doctors and the need for many more.
Leroy highlights the challenges faced by women in labor, who often have to travel long distances to reach the nearest hospital. He underscores the importance of having more specialists to address these issues effectively.
PAMA supports doctors who want to contribute to their communities. Leroy recognizes that some doctors lack the necessary support to make a lasting impact and may end up relocating to larger cities. He emphasizes the crucial steps that Guyana must take to develop properly, including improving infrastructure, increasing the number of specialty doctors in his district, and expanding medical schools throughout the country.
By bridging the healthcare disparities in rural America and the Caribbean, PAMA aims to help the underserved.
