Passport services to become fully accessible online by year’s end- Minister Walrond

As the government accelerates its digital transformation agenda, Home Affairs Minister Oneidge Walrond has announced that passport services are expected to become fully accessible online by the end of the year. Speaking on the Starting Point Podcast with host Fareeza Haniff, Minister Walrond said the ongoing rollout of online immigration services has already proven successful, eliminating human bias and reducing opportunities for extortion and bribery.

During the interview, the security minister also highlighted key initiatives, including ankle monitors for domestic violence offenders, stronger anti-drug measures, wider police body camera use, new firearm licensing approaches, and a 25% drop in serious crimes.

This week’s Weekly Digest showcases Guyana’s steady progress across tourism, education, culture, and infrastructure. Minister of Tourism, Industry and Commerce, Suzanne Rodrigues, announced new measures to strengthen the tourism sector, including establishing permanent information hubs at ports of entry. She also facilitated small business loans for persons living with disabilities, ensuring inclusivity and economic empowerment.

Amerindian Heritage Month continued with vibrant cultural celebrations and investments in Amerindian communities. Minister Sarah Brown commissioned a $15 million meat centre in Meriwau and funded new tourism cabins in Shulinab. The highly anticipated Heritage Games 2025 also began at the Everest Cricket Ground, where 800 young athletes are competing in football, cricket, archery, volleyball, swimming, and athletics.

President’s Diary | UNGA Address, Global Talks & Unity in Guyana

In this week’s President’s Diary, President Dr. Irfaan Ali showcased leadership both at home and on the world stage. He began his week rallying with fans at the Guyana Amazon Warriors cricket match, a celebration of national pride and unity.

Soon after, President Ali traveled to New York for the 80th United Nations General Assembly, accompanied by key members of his delegation. There, he delivered a powerful address highlighting global crises such as climate change, food insecurity, conflicts in Gaza and Ukraine, and the humanitarian challenges in Sudan and Haiti. His remarks underscored Guyana’s commitment to peace, security, and sustainable development.

On the sidelines of UNGA, President Ali engaged in high-level bilateral talks. He met with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio to strengthen security cooperation, as well as with officials from the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, and the U.S. Export-Import Bank to deepen ties in trade and investment. He also updated UN Secretary-General António Guterres on the Guyana-Venezuela border controversy, reaffirming Guyana’s commitment to international justice.

Health advancement was another highlight of the trip. The President witnessed the signing of an agreement with Northwell Health to modernize Guyana’s emergency medical systems, beginning with an assessment of ambulance services in October. To close the week, President Ali and First Lady Aria Ali joined other world leaders at a dinner hosted by U.S. President Donald Trump.

From celebrating unity in Guyana to representing the nation’s interests on the global stage, President Ali’s week was marked by diplomacy, leadership, and a focus on improving lives at home and abroad.
