IDB predicts higher food import prices, increased forex demand, but “robust” economy

The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) on Wednesday said falling oil prices and higher import prices are among factors that can see a further rise in the cost of imported food and increased demand for foreign exchange. "Growing policy uncertainty and ongoing tariff wars could fuel even higher import prices, particularly food imports, further increasing inflationary price pressures and worsening the terms of trade," the IDB said in its latest edition of the Caribbean Economics Quarterly, "How Are External Forces Impacting Trade, Growth, and Investment in the Caribbean?" The publication is dated December 2025....

Guyana, and Trinidad and Tobago not included in latest US visa policy for the Caribbean

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, Jan 14, CMC – Several Caribbean Community (CARICOM), countries, excluding Guyana, and Trinidad and Tobago, have been included among 75 countries that the United States Wednesday announced it was suspending the processing of immigrant visas.

OPINION: Reflections on U.S. action in Venezuela

First published in United Press International By Evan Ellis, Senior Non-Resident Associate, Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) Jan. 13 (UPI) -- The Jan. 3 U.S. operation to capture Nicholas Maduro and subsequent U.S. actions illustrate the capabilities of both U.S. "hard power" and "soft power" when applied correctly, as well as their limits. The successful U.S. operation was an impressive feat, reflecting not only advanced U.S....

OPINION: CARICOM Faces a Unity-defining Moment

CARICOM Faces a Unity-defining Moment By Dr. Nand C. Bardouille The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) is experiencing a difficult foreign policy-related moment, which variously impacts its 14 sovereign member states. America's use of military force in the Caribbean since September 2025 drew two disparate strands of reaction from these states, testing the bloc's unity. At this juncture, CARICOM's leadership is…...

OPINION: Minister Rodrigues and Pres. Ali -a masterclass in ‘smelling salts’

By GHK Lall Minister Susan Rodrigues approached and appealed. Pres. Irfaan Ali adjudicated and approved. The clutches of the octopus reach upwards and they extend downwards. Of care and consideration. Of presidential compassion. Pres. Ali is now more than review board, law board, and a bottomless board of kindness, all by himself. He is the board of final determination. I nominate him for a Nobel Prize. ...

OPINION: Pres. acceptance of the minister’s explanation doesn’t convince, inspire

by GHK Lall It is a positive development that embattled PPP Government Minister Susan Rodrigues took her asset portfolio to Pres. Irfaan Ali. According to a Demerara Waves article dated Jan 11. 2026, the president has accepted the minister’s explanation on her asset accumulation. On the face of it, this is encouraging. But is it convincing? Personally speaking, Pres. Ali may not be the best judge of explanations offered relative to what appears to be a layered and complex asset mix. ...
