🌟Come to visit us🥳Last weekend in The Waste Land🥳🥳

【Artwork intro】

Lovers' Discourse｜DENG Yuanyuan 鄧緣圓
Video, 2022
(Located on the 9th Floor)

In the stream of phenomena, the fragments of language picked up by consciousness weave stories, memories, and imaginations. When carefully crafted lines are interpreted by randomly filmed people and objects, the protagonist of the story disappears, the meaning of the story itself ceases to matter, and the meaning contained in the material of reality is dissolved. The flowing consciousness piecing together a believable story proves the opposite of the unreliability of perception, the unknowability of the world, and the counter-narrative of reality itself.

I interpret the feelings that begin with the initial image of love as the disappearance of the image in which the non-physical object of eros resides. The slice of reality becomes a short-lived eternity in memory.

I composed the recording of the play reading and the video that I shot in mainly three locations——street, road, and places around the sea.

🌟Speakers intro:

Dr Linda Chiu-han Lai is a research-based interdisciplinary artist, seeking extension of her doctoral training in Cinema Studies to relevant artistic and theoretical endeavors. She persists in artistic creation as the practice of theory. As a critical researcher on the History of Everyday Life, her works are historiographic experiments, visual and auto-ethnography, urbanity and popular culture. he Floating Projects is her latest experiment on modes of sustainability in art-making.

Wan Ki LO is a Hong Kong transdisciplinary art practitioner, independent curator and educator born and based in Hong Kong. She graduated with a Bachelor of Architectural Studies at the University of Hong Kong and attended the MFA program at the School of Drama, Yale University in 2009-10. Her immersive set design for ‘My luxurious 50 sq. ft. Life’ （Cinematic Theatre）earned The Best Set Design of The 24th Hong Kong Drama Awards, Best Scenography in The 7th Hong Kong Theatre Libre, and was the ﬁnalist in World Stage Design 2017.

Tsz Wai Pun is an emerging artist and filmmaker based in Hong Kong. In the age of speed and saturation, she reflects upon the meaning of stillness. In her work, she explores the moving image, memory and the passing of time. She holds a Bachelor's Degree in Arts and Sciences from University College London and is currently a MFA student at the School of Creative Media, City University Hong Kong. Her work, ‘The Years Flow Like Water’ was awarded Best Work at the Floating Projects Video Zine D-Normal/V-Essay (Issue 3).

【Artwork Intro 作品介紹】

Only Cloud Knows
Jiaqi LU 盧家祺

Only Cloud Knows is a browser extension that utilizes the machine learning-based image recognition service, Google Cloud Vision, to evaluate online artworks in real-time. The labels returned from the service – categories with probabilistic proof – are then overlaid over the images as the page loads.

The project intends not to provide a universal solution to the question of ‘what is or is not art?’ under the power of a computational god, but rather, through sketching such scenarios – works of art in heterogeneous milieus be standardized as calculable objects – to interrogate the original vision that the Internet and artificial intelligence once promised.

Cavity ｜Tsz Wai PUN 潘子懷

Cavity collects traces of a lost city. Once known as one of the most densely populated places on Earth, the Kowloon Walled City was a labyrinth of tightly packed buildings. Demolished in the early 1990s, a park now fills its space. In an attempt to uncover the signs of what remains;

a set of dentures,
a map drawn from memory,
a boy spotting planes that flew 30 years ago,

Cavity reveals material objects of lost time, lining the walls of absence.

Bodily Exploration and Perspectives Beyond Human

In the first of this online artist talk series, Yang Hao and Melody Qingmei Li will share the artistic processes and key concepts of their artworks currently featured at The Waste Land, followed by an open discussion with Dr. Zheng Bo on expanded perspectives through artistic practices across various mediums and contexts.

Speakers: Dr. ZHENG Bo | YANG Hao |Melody Qingmei LI

Speakers Intro:

Dr Zheng Bo is an artist specializing in ecological art practice. Committed to multispecies vibrancy, he investigates the past and imagines the future from the perspectives of marginalized communities and marginalized plants. He creates weedy gardens, living slogans, and eco-queer films to cultivate ecological wisdom beyond the Anthropo-extinction-event.

After 20 years in dance and several staged solos, Yang Hao researches a form of intertwining dance and stand-up comedy. More recently he has worked to understand and practice the use of media art in dance and the ambiguous relationship between technology and live performance. Born in Chongqing, he is based in Hong Kong.

Melody Qingmei Li is an emerging artist, currently based in Hong Kong. Originally from Mainland, she moved to the United States to study Art History, Fine Arts, and Finance at The College of William and Mary. After graduation, she moved to Hong Kong and worked in the banking and investment industry. She joined the MFA CM program at CityU in 2021 to focus on her artistic practices. Her practices originate from rising doubts about realities projected through daily life, alternating with three facets: environment, body, and the connections. Various mediums are intertwined, including painting, moving images, installations, and writing.
