Nathan Road
In 2005, designer-photographer Kenneth Lo began documenting Hong Kong’s 3.8-kilometer Nathan Road, stitching individual frames into a seamless urban scroll. Slowly unfurled, page by page, with bilingual narration, it reveals the street’s hidden dialogues—every storefront, every passerby, every moment in time.
Grandma Grandpa Cook
Over forty grandparents share childhood memories and imprints of their era, alongside recipes for their signature dishes. Sesame sweet soup , refugee congee, stewed sea cucumber braised with winter mushrooms, black moss and dried oysters, fried (crispy) rice cookies…These Cantonese cuisine represents tradition, childhood, bygone hardships, Hong Kong‘s culinary heritage, the taste of home, and ultimately, love.
Lesser Designs
S-shaped hooks, racks for the seasoning jars, cardboard paper as table stabilizers, translucent green bus shelter roofs, wooden delivery carts, beaded figurines... To artist Siu king-chung, these seemingly haphazard ”makeshift designs“ embody the city’s most vibrant spatial ingenuity.
Our Home, Shek Kip Mei (1954-2006)
In 2005, when photographer Vincent Yu discovered that Hong Kong‘s first public housing estate, Shek Kip Mei, was about to be demolished, he went to the government archives. There, he pored over reports of the 1954 Shek Kip Mei fire and resettlement census statistics... He knew what he had to do. Armed with a camera and a pen, he set out to document the transformative fires, the water-rationing years, the rooftop schools, the fading neighborhood shops, and, finally, the faces of a disappearing community.
Our City Our Legends
