Bullying in the workplace?! 😱

It is said that we can’t choose who we work with, which may raise workplace tensions and even lead to bullying. But it’s in these moments that the psychological safety of the team is compromised. How do we address this?

In the third episode of Team Stories with Ray Yuen, our corporate trainer and Chief Learning Officer, he talks about the Netflix show Adolescence and how we can learn to be better leaders.

Four key moments:
🔑 Decode the Bully, Hear the Hidden Cry - tune in to your team
🔑 Fight the Fright, Lead with Light - investigate with an open heart
🔑 Know the Digital Dimension - a person’s digital space influences their offline behavior
🔑 Build Psychological Safety - foster an environment where people can speak up

Businesses operating in the same ecosystem don’t always have to be competitive. Instead, entrepreneurs can collaborate to expand their network, gain new skills, and attract a wider audience.

Here are ways to improve business partnerships and collaborations:

🤝 Set Clear Goals And Expectations: Establish clear goals and expectations and regularly interact to seek mutually beneficial opportunities for growth and innovation.

🤝 Prioritize Open Communication: Prioritize building trust and rapport through open communication to ensure that everyone is working towards the same objectives.

🤝 Foster Transparency And Mutual Understanding: Continuously exchange knowledge, challenges, solutions, success stories, and needs to comprehend your partner's perspective and help them understand your own.

🤝Join Industry Advocacy Organizations: Collectively solve industry-level problems with members of advocacy organizations to build partnerships and collaborate effectively with other companies.

🤝 Be Realistic: Form strategic partnerships only when there is certainty and a clear mutual benefit to ensure success.

🤝 Form Strategic Alliances: Grow your company’s business and enable employees to broaden their skills and connections by creating strategic alliances with other members of your operational ecosystem.

🤝 Leverage Complementary Strengths: Identify your company’s strengths that complement other companies and use them to work towards the mutual benefit of both.

🤝 Schedule Regular Meetings: Set a regular meeting schedule to discuss new ideas on how both parties can work together in order to reach a wider audience, resulting in a win-win.

Despite challenges that may arise, these advantageous relationships can only achieve lasting success if both parties are committed to making the partnership favorable for both sides.

💡 Here are the characteristics of major communication styles.

In our last post, we gave 4 communication styles that you can use to be an effective communicator. This week, let’s take a deep dive into these styles and see the pros and cons of each, so you can utilize them to your advantage!

Note: It is important to note that while certain communication styles are commonly employed by scholars or trainers, no style is an absolute either-or. In practice, a combination of different styles is often used.

What is most crucial is to have a clear understanding of your communication goals and the specific situation at hand to determine which style to lean on more heavily to effectively convey your message.

💡 Direct style - usually used in Western cultures that are straightforward
Pros: This style is good to use when sending instructions because of its clear message that is easy to be understood.
Cons: Direct communication may lead to conflict if blunt words are used.

💡 Indirect style - usually used in Eastern cultures as they value social harmony
Pros: People who ascribe to this style usually use polite words that avoid conflict.
Cons: Since the meaning of the message is not explicit, others may misunderstand what they want to say.

💡 Formal style - happens in a professional setting
Pro: Documentary evidence is available e.g. reports.
Con: Conversations have a long chain of command.

💡 Informal style - casual flow of conversation
Pro: Message is conveyed quickly.
Con: Usually there is no documentation of these conversations.

It’s also vital to know that a lot of factors can change the effectiveness of your messages, such as culture, age, gender, etc.

Context is really important when deciding when and how to use these communication styles. It’s important to read the situation and use one or a mix of these to effectively communicate your message.
