How can we make Hong Kong a more attractive, liveable and people-centric city, while responding to the city's evolving economic and social needs?

By being more progressive and agile in our design approach, says acclaimed architect and urban strategist Dennis Ho, founder of Design_Curate_Places.

His vision of Hong Kong includes, among other things, more pedestrian-prioritised streets and well-designed public open spaces, greater interconnectivity between urban centres and their natural surroundings, better utilization of the waterfront, sensitive urban renewal, and greener and more adaptable buildings.

Ho, pictured below with a model of the award-winning Taikoo Green Ribbon net zero tower concept he led during his days at ARUP, spoke with PERSPECTIVE about his bold ideas and insights.

A nature focused design concept has scooped the top prize in a pioneering design competition aimed at reshaping the living environment of a public housing complex in Sham Shui Po.

Talented young designers Ho Sun Chau and Cherry Lau (below) earned the HK$30,000 prize with their concept of welcoming outdoor spaces to promote the physical and mental well-being of estate residents, described as a magnified version of an ideal home and garden.

Organised jointly by the Housing Bureau and the Hong Kong Housing Authority, the "Let's Go Well-being Chak On" Design Competition attracted as many as 97 team entries, involving more than 230 talented young designers and students across the city.

Acclaimed architectural designer Barrie Ho is continuing to spread his influence across the globe, opening a London studio to complement his recent move into Sydney and long-running Hong Kong based practice, BARRIE HO Architecture Interiors Ltd.

As well as designing luxury houses in the greater London area, Ho has also opened a gallery inspired by legendary British PM Winston Churchill!

The top 10 submissions have been selected in a pioneering design competition aimed at reshaping the living environment of Chak On Estate, a public housing complex in Sham Shui Po, Hong Kong. This contest taps into the innovative potential of young designers to reimagine community spaces.

The finalists include five teams of students aged 18 to 25, studying design-related disciplines at Hong Kong’s tertiary institutions, and five teams of emerging architects and designers aged under 35. Their groundbreaking ideas have been shortlisted in the “Let’s Go Well-being Chak On” Design Competition, which offers a total prize pool of nearly HK$100,000, industry-wide recognition, and the opportunity to see their designs come to life.

Recycled Glass Butterflies, a stunning display of 600 vitreous butterflies at Swire Properties Citygate Outlets, earned a Gold A&D Award for Interior Design – Best Temporary Structure for ARTA Architects, helmed by talented young designers Arnold Wong and Tat Lai Wong, and V Design.
