Today marks the one year anniversary of the Yuen Long Attacks that ignited the escalating protests in 2019 that the 2020 in Hong Kong aims to extinguish among other things such as freedom of speech.

Last October I was still somewhat optimistic which way the winds would blow and did not see this coming that Beijing would take so drastic step as to end press freedom and wipe out basic law after only 23 years of the 50 agreed upon between China and Britain when handover of Hong Kong island and Kowloon was bundled together with New Territories when the 99 year lease of NT was up.

Today of all days, silence from is what you should be most afraid of and if that happens it speaks louder than anything marionette government could say or what broken record if any the one Party decides to play.

Finnish Police gives hilarious advise to berry picking people to not get lost and stay safe when people in Finland exercise their everyman’s right to go foraging for arctic berries such as blue berries and particularly the yellow cloudberry that is the queen of the swamp lands in Lapland.

Based on the vast experience on the past rescue missions the Oulu Police department has profiled the typical cases and it turns out it often is the middle-aged person who knows the forest or swamp in the wilderness very well who then just this one time gets lost or exhausted.

And the best thing to take away from this article is this: Finnish police knows and believes that they exist to serve the public so they encourage the berry pickers to call if and inevitable when they get lost and need help. They prefer this kind of assignments over disturbances at festivals and I assume over domestic violence.

Rhubarb-BlackCurrant Cordial

While making rhubarb-chutney (recipe posted here before) the peels can be used for cordial.

Ingredients:
Rhubarb peels of 8-10 stalks
10 black currant leaves
2.5 dl or a bit over a cup of sugar
3 tsp citric acid
2l water

1. Wash rhubarb stalks and black currant leaves well
2. Pull the rhubarb peels using knife (use rest of rhubarb for chutney or jam)
3. Add sugar and citric acid
4. Pour boiling water and mix
5. Cover with lid and leave over night (24h) in room temperature
6. Next day sterilise glass bottles with boiling water and pour cordial to bottles.
7. Refrigerate and consume within two weeks (mix with carbonated or still water)

Hong Kong people are the superheros. Widely used masks do make a difference with Covid-19 and other respitatory viruses. Imagine if we did so also during regular flu season from now on. I suspect the cost of masks would be peanuts compared with cost of intensive care not to mention the human cost.

With the government flailing, the city’s citizens decided to organize their own coronavirus response.
