DB SUMMER SPLASHTOPIA
DB Summer Splashtopia kicks off on July 24, and will be in place through August 31. Open daily from 10.30am to 1.30pm and 3pm to 6.30pm on Tai Pak Beach, it’s billed as Hong Kong’s biggest beach water park. You can expect eight massive inflatable bouncy areas and a 10-metre water slide, along with a myriad splashtastic games and sports.

AQUARIUM-MAKING WORKSHOP
Sign up as a group of three to take part in an aquarium-making workshop at the Multi-purpose Hall, DB Office Centre on July 12 from 10am to 12pm. Each group gets to take home an aquarium (12cm x 8cm x 10cm) containing two small fish, two figurines, decorative rocks and aquatic plants. CONGRATULATIONS ZHUANG YUAN JAYLEN
Congratulations go to Year 1 Discovery College student Jaylen Zheng, who was named Overall Champion (Zhuang Yuan) at this year’s Chinese Language Festival. Jaylen took part in five competitions at the festival, competing against native-speaking kindergarten-aged students from all over the world. He placed first in Western Instrument Performance, Ancient Poems Solo Recitation, Tongue Twisters and Reading out Pinyin Words, and second runner-up in Modern Poems Solo Recitation. The awards ceremony was held on June 7. Bravo!

Nearly 1 Million Cigarette Butts Collected on Global ‘No Butts Day’

On July 5, volunteers in 25 countries collected nearly one million cigarette butts during No Butts Day, a global initiative to raise awareness about the environmental harm caused by cigarette filters, which are made of toxic plastic.

Hong Kong joined the event for the first time, with 36 volunteers collecting nearly 22,000 butts. Organized by local charity Plastic Free Seas and environmental advocate Yeungs, the campaign spread internationally via social media.

Cigarette filters break down into microplastics and leach harmful chemicals. Despite common belief, filters don’t protect smokers’ health and may even worsen it. Experts and the WHO are calling for a global ban on plastic filters, labeling them “avoidable and problematic plastic.”

Globally, about 100,000 cigarette butts are littered every second. Organizers emphasize that awareness alone isn’t enough—legislation is needed to ban plastic filters and stop this widespread pollution.
