There is a particular pleasure in watching two young stars, still carrying the glow of their early fame, bounce off each other inside a period school comedy that never quite takes itself seriously.
Dicky Cheung’s elastic comic mischief and Aaron Kwok’s earnest physical presence form the emotional spine of this cheerfully serviceable early-90s Hong Kong confection. Their rivalry-to-friendship arc clicks with modest satisfaction, while Vivian Chow remains luminous as ever. The film retains a sunny, slightly naïve quality that feels of its moment — Hong Kong cinema still confident enough to make cheerful period entertainments without needing to undercut them with darkness.
It simply asks you to enjoy the company of its young leads for ninety-odd minutes, to smile at their schemes, and to accept that friendship and a bit of courage can still resolve most problems in this particular corner of the Ming Dynasty.
That is not a small pleasure.

A little girl is calmly told that her left hand belongs to the devil.
From that quiet, ordinary sentence, Shih-Ching Tsou’s debut feature unfolds into one of the most delicate and piercing Taiwanese films of the year.
Set amid the steam and neon of a Taipei night market, Left-Handed Girl follows a single mother and her two daughters trying to rebuild their lives. What begins as a story of economic survival becomes something far deeper — a tender, clear-eyed study of how shame is passed down, how women learn to police themselves, and how love and tradition can wound in the same breath.
Nina Ye, as five-year-old I-Jing, is extraordinary. She carries the film’s emotional heart without ever seeming to perform. The camera stays close, finding poetry in small gestures, exhausted shoulders, and the private negotiations children make with guilt that adults rarely notice.

A quiet marvel of observation. Specific to Taiwan, yet strangely universal.

In the neon-soaked underbelly of 1980s Bangkok, a thief becomes a legend through audacious heists, unbreakable brotherhood, and raw defiance. Nonzee Nimibutr delivers a stylish, atmospheric Thai crime saga that thrills with visceral action while diving deep into loyalty, myth-making, and the cost of living on the edge.
⭐ 8/10 – A brooding, character-driven standout with star-making turns, especially from Apo Nattawin as the charismatic Tee Yai. His chemistry with Most Witsarut Himmarat is electric.
If you love gritty outlaw tales with heart, this one’s a must-watch on Netflix.

In this delightful whodunit, shepherd George (Hugh Jackman) reads detective novels to his flock every night. When he’s found murdered, his clever sheep — voiced by the brilliant Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Bryan Cranston, Chris O’Dowd and more — turn the pages of real life to solve the crime.
Blending live-action English countryside charm with expressive CGI that gives each sheep real personality (those ear twitches and soulful eyes!), director Kyle Balda (Minions) and screenwriter Craig Mazin craft something truly special: a family mystery that’s witty, warm, and unexpectedly profound.
Laugh-out-loud moments, touching meditations on grief, community, and the power of stories — all wrapped in sun-dappled fields and a perfect score. It’s a gentle reminder that even the humblest among us can rise to meet life’s biggest mysteries.
A new breed of cosy crime caper that works for all ages. Highly recommended!

Just dropped my full review of The Violin Case (走失的小提琴) — a raw, heartfelt, and wildly entertaining nocturnal odyssey from Macanese director Max Bessmertny.
Struggling American painter Theo (Kelsey Wilhelm) loses his prized violin artwork (Napoleon on both sides!) in a taxi… and his worst night spirals into a chaotic, funny, and deeply human search through the city’s back alleys, shady deals, and unexpected grace. Think After Hours meets Macau’s humid, multicultural soul.
I rated it 8/10 ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Bessmertny directs with real love for these streets — handheld energy, imperfect beauty, and big themes about art, identity, and what happens when your creation slips away.
A must-watch for anyone who’s ever poured their soul into something fragile.

Meryl Streep is magnificent (as always), Anne Hathaway brings grounded maturity, Emily Blunt steals scenes with razor timing, and Stanley Tucci remains pure delight. The costumes? Absolute feast.
