Police have revealed plans to adopt facial recognition in their citywide surveillance network by the end of this year, with officers looking for "strategic locations" to deploy the technology to investigate crimes.

The force has been setting up surveillance cameras across Hong Kong since last year under an initiative called "SmartView".

Apart from stationary vantage points, the devices were also installed on about 60 police vehicles as of July.

Donald Trump and US Federal Reserve chairman Jerome Powell appeared together for a tense meeting on Thursday as the US president toured the central bank after ramping up his attacks on its management of the economy.

During a brief but awkward exchange in front of reporters during a tour of the building, the pair bickered over the price tag for the makeover, which Trump said was US$3.1 billion.

The actual cost of the facelift has been put at US$2.5 billion, and Powell was quick to correct the president, telling him: "I haven't heard that from anybody."

Thailand launched air strikes on Cambodian military targets on Thursday as Cambodia fired rockets and artillery, killing at least 11 civilians, in a dramatic escalation of a long-running border row between the two neighbours.

The neighbours are locked in a bitter spat over an area known as the Emerald Triangle, where the borders of both countries and Laos meet, and which is home to several ancient temples.

The squabble has dragged on for decades, flaring into bloody military clashes more than 15 years ago and again in May, when a Cambodian soldier was killed in a firefight.

The conflict blazed up on Thursday, with Cambodia firing rockets and artillery shells into Thailand and the Thai military scrambling F-16 jets to carry out air strikes.

The Thai ministry of public health said at least 11 civilians had been killed, most of them in a rocket strike near a petrol station in Sisaket province.

Both sides blamed the other for starting the fighting, which erupted near two temples on the border between the Thai province of Surin and Cambodia's Oddar Meanchey.

China expressed deep concern and called for dialogue and consultation to resolve the conflict, offering to play a constructive role in de-escalation.

A wildfire killed at least 10 forest workers and rescuers on Wednesday who were battling to douse the flames near Eskisehir in western Turkey, the authorities said.

High temperatures and strong winds have fanned the wildfire between Istanbul and the capital Ankara since Tuesday morning, with the spread threatening homes and forcing the evacuation of several villages.

The victims were wrong-footed when the flames suddenly changed direction, causing them to be "burnt alive," according to news website BirGun.

Fencer Ryan Choi has made history by winning Hong Kong, China's first-ever gold medal at the Fencing World Championships.

The 27-year-old beat his opponent from Russia, Kirill Borodachev, 15-9 in the men's foil final in Tbilisi, Georgia.

That marked a milestone for the SAR, as Choi is the first athlete from Hong Kong to strike gold at the annual fencing tournament.

Fellow foil fencer Edgar Cheung, and former teammate Vivian Kong each have two bronze medals from past editions.

The win continues a red-hot streak for Choi in recent months. He already clinched the Asian title at the Shanghai Foil Grand Prix back in May, and a maiden Asian Fencing Championships gold last month.

Choi reflected on his incredible journey, and shared his joy about the latest victory.

Air India said on Tuesday it has grounded a passenger jet for checks after a power generator caught fire shortly after landing at New Delhi.

The aircraft's auxillary power unit (APU) caught fire when its passengers were getting off the aircraft, and was automatically shut down, a spokesperson for the airline said in a statement.

APU is an electrical power generator typically located at the rear of an aircraft. Its primary function is to start the main engines and power essential onboard systems while the airplane is parked at the airport.

Passengers "disembarked normally" and are safe but the aircraft, which was flying from Hong Kong, suffered some damage, the airline said.

The impacted flight is an Airbus A321, data from flightradar24 showed.

Air India said it has notified the regulator of the incident. India's aviation regulator was not immediately available for comment.
