Creating a comfortable environment to appreciate art is the aim of the Hong Kong City Art Fair. By hosting a three-day event at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Central at the end of November, they succeed in removing the formality of a white-cube gallery, instead providing a refined five-star setting to explore, enjoy, and appreciate art. This year's fair is a collaboration among thirty galleries, institutions, and artists from over ten regions, each offering chances to engage with experts, other collectors, and the artists themselves. Consider this your invitation to join this urban art journey.

The Lingnan School of Painting revolutionised Chinese art in the twentieth century by bridging two worlds: the ancient traditions of ink and brush, and the modernising impulses of a nation in transformation. The Hong Kong Heritage Museum’s Legacy of Lingnan School of Painting commemorates the 120th anniversary of master painter Chao Shao-an's birth with 120 works that illuminate both his personal journey and the movement that reshaped Chinese painting.

Master ceramic artist Solan Chiu has spent years forming her unique style. She invents new ways to treat surfaces by using unexpected tools, bringing together old Chinese traditions and modern ideas. Her practice is deeply personal and comparable to writing a biography using clay and glaze instead of a pen. Solan’s artistic journey has been deliberate, from functional pottery to sculptures and large-scale installations. She remains curious, playful, and fiercely independent, all qualities that accumulated through four decades as a self-taught artist.

Pablo Picasso is a name that instantly evokes genius, innovation, and controversy. Born in Málaga, Spain, in 1881, he carried the spirit of his homeland wherever he went. Whether in Paris or on the sunlit shores of the French Riviera, traces of Spain always surfaced in his work. Picasso: Beauty and Drama exhibition at the Grand Lisboa Palace Resort in Macau tells the story of the artist’s Spanish heritage which profoundly influenced his art and life. Picasso’s life was complex and passionate: he ardently fought for peace, fervently pursued his muses, and unapologetically embraced the bloodsport of bullfighting. Somehow, all these influences found their way onto ceramics, lithographs and canvases.

The film Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In depicts the City of Darkness as a main character, a gritty, raw, and nuanced place for an action-packed narrative in the finest Hong Kong-styled film tradition. The shared hardships experienced by the characters in the movie remind us that even the darkest places can bring out the best in people. The movie stirred nostalgia and curiosity for the now-demolished Kowloon Walled City. The exhibition, Kowloon Walled City: A Cinematic Journey Movie Set, features eight rooms displaying remakes of the movie sets alongside authentic relics, provides a sense of what old Hong Kong was like.
