Hong Kong, China karate queen Grace Lau captured the gold medal in the Women’s Individual Kata event at The World Games 2025.

This is also Hong Kong, China’s first medal at the Games in Chengdu.

Wong Po-kee, Chef de Mission of the Hong Kong, China Delegation to The World Games 2025, hailed Lau’s performance, saying she “showcased her skills as a world top-ranked athlete.”

“She competed in five matches spanning eight hours,
from morning to night, but still she progressed with ease and delivered in every match,” he said.

“This gold medal marks Hong Kong’s first at the Games, a proud achievement that not only celebrates Grace’s success but also inspires fellow athletes as they prepare to compete.”

Israel's security cabinet has approved a plan proposed by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for the military to "take control" of Gaza City, his office said in a statement on Friday.

Under the plan to "defeat" Hamas in the Gaza Strip, the Israeli army "will prepare to take control of Gaza City while distributing humanitarian assistance to the civilian population outside combat zones", it said.

South Korean prosecutors requested an arrest warrant for former first lady Kim Keon-hee after questioning her about allegations including bribery and stock manipulation.

The move comes as former president Yoon Suk-yeol remains in detention over his declaration of martial law in December, which briefly suspended civilian rule before being overturned by parliament.

If granted, the warrant would mark the first time in South Korean history that a former president and first lady were both arrested.

Five people have died and 24 were injured after the cables of a popular suspension bridge in Xinjiang snapped on Wednesday, according to local authorities.

29 people fell off the bridge when its deck tilted.

The scenic spot at northern Xinjiang's Ili Kazak Autonomous Prefecture has since been closed, as authorities probe the cause of the incident.

Cathay Pacific announced plans to purchase 14 Boeing 777-9 aircraft, with the option to buy up to seven more. The deal coincided with a one percent increase in the airline’s first-half profit for 2025.

CEO Ronald Lam stated the new aircraft will help modernise the fleet and strengthen Hong Kong’s global connectivity.

With a range of 13,510 km, the 777-9 will allow Cathay Pacific to connect passengers directly between Hong Kong and its global long-haul destinations, Boeing said in a statement.

After this order, Cathay’s total number of 777-9s on order will reach 35 aircraft.

Seven people are missing in Guangzhou after rainfall triggered a landslide on Wednesday, local authorities said.

A total of 14 people were trapped in the landslide that occurred at about 8.30am in Dayuan Village in the city's Baiyun District, with multiple houses damaged.

As of noon, rescuers had pulled seven of them from the debris, all in stable condition.

Nearby residents have been evacuated and further search and rescue work is under way.

Forecasters have warned of more thunderstorms after heavy rain pounded Guangzhou, forcing its Baiyun airport to cancel 363 flights and delay 311.

US President Donald Trump has signalled that fresh tariffs on imported pharmaceuticals and semiconductors could be unveiled within the coming week, amid a cascade of incoming duties.

Police said the revamped version of their mobile app is a more user-friendly "one-stop shop" offering intuitive and personalised services.

Users were able to do everything from asking questions to applying for licences and reporting crime within the app.

Deputy Police Commissioner Johnson Chan said the redesigned interface increased efficiency by reducing the need for in-person visits or phone calls. This allowed the force to free up manpower to handle emergencies and speed up non-emergency case processing.

Chan noted the previous version of the app, launched in 2012, had many features but wasn’t easy to use.

The app sends notifications with general information like traffic control and personalised updates on individual cases. It also features a new AI-powered chatbot that learns over time and provides human-like responses to a wide range of inquiries.

The Indian army brought in sniffer dogs, drones and heavy earth-moving equipment on Wednesday to search for scores missing a day after a deadly Himalayan flash flood.

At least four people were killed and around 100 are unaccounted for after a wall of muddy water and debris tore down a narrow mountain valley, smashing into the town of Dharali in Uttarakhand state.

A tornado hit near a geopark in China's Inner Mongolia region on Monday, sending debris flying near the long funnel cloud as people looked on.

A social media footage showed clouds swirling above the narrow brown tornado column at Xinsheng Village in Ulanqab City.

The strong wind gusts damaged eight tourist yurts owned by a local homestay operator, according to CCTV.

The broadcaster quoted local authorities as saying no casualties were reported.
