The Tourism Board on Tuesday said that 5.46 million visitors came to Hong Kong in August, making it the highest monthly figure since the Covid pandemic.

The provisional figure represents a year-on-year increase of six percent.

The board attributed the growth to a number of major international meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions as well as mega events staged in the SAR.

Looking ahead, the board said it would step up promotions for upcoming festivals such as the Mid-Autumn Festival and Halloween as well as expand the scale of flagship mega events to lure visitors.

Chief Executive John Lee said the city's first five-year plan would set out Hong Kong’s overall direction and long-term vision.

Speaking to reporters ahead of the Executive Council meeting on Tuesday, Lee said the five-year plan's blue cover symbolises openness, progress and stability.

The Policy Address would retain its green cover to represent continuity, vitality and hope.

Lee will deliver both documents on Wednesday, while a special summary booklet will be distributed to help the public better understand their contents.

Manufacturers of disposable sanitary pads have been urged to step up quality control and transparency to better protect users.

The call from the Consumer Council on Monday came after it carried out tests covering 36 types of disposable winged sanitary pads that range between 22 centimetres and 43 centimetres in length.

More than half of them lacked labelling on information such as key ingredients and surface materials, which the watchdog said is crucial for people with sensitive skin.

The four-time NBA champion and Olympic gold medallist, who signed a deal with sports brand Li-Ning, has also made stops in Beijing, Shenzhen and other mainland cities.

Philippine rescuers have recovered at least 30 bodies from a burned-out ferry in waters off Palawan, raising the death toll from the blaze to 35.

The bodies were taken back to a port near the resort town of Coron.

The remains were recovered inside the M/V June Aster, which ran aground after a fire erupted on Wednesday evening.

Authorities say the bodies will have to undergo forensic tests before they can be identified.

Officers are still looking for over 50 missing people.

Police have arrested a 36-year-old man on suspicion of theft after he allegedly refused to share lottery winnings with colleagues who pooled money for a Mark Six ticket, and then disappeared.

Media reports say the man placed the bet, and the winnings were deposited into his account.

Police were alerted on Wednesday after the informant and the arrested man couldn't agree on how to split the prize money, totalling about HK$30 million.

Police Commissioner Joe Chow says the relevant funds in the suspect's bank account have been frozen.

Mainland authorities are continuing their investigation into a fire that broke out on a foreign-flagged cargo ship in Qingdao, which claimed 25 lives.

The blaze occurred at the Qingdao Beihai shipyard during repair and inspection works.

Out of 42 people on board, 12 were safely evacuated, while 5 remain hospitalised in stable condition.

State media CCTV said a thorough probe is currently underway to ascertain the cause of the blaze.

The government says it will launch a new round of recruitment on Saturday, aiming to recruit 40 administrative officers and 100 executive officers.

The recruitment drive will also cover Assistant Information Officer, Assistant Trade Officer, Management Services Officer and Transport Officer posts.

The positions are open to all permanent residents who meet the entry requirements, as well as students graduating in the 2026-27 or 2027-28 academic years.
