Embrace Beyond the Tool

Managerial can align teams with organizational , but they do not by themselves enhance leadership. Employees are not directly motivated by tools or —they are by how leaders interact and with them. The essential element of leadership lies in authentic and , not solely in achieving the results measured by managerial tools.

It was a great pleasure to have the opportunity to discuss with over 30 leaders from the and sectors how to implement the within a environment.

During this , we explored several key perspectives:

🔍 should be cautious of the trap of assuming that the Balanced Scorecard objectively measures employee . The scorecard reflects , not . Therefore, daily communication and practice are equally important for achieving meaningful results.

🔍Effective should be adapted to an employee’s task maturity, rather than their individual maturity. In today’s workplace, employees may perform confidently in one task while remaining inexperienced in another.

🔍Giving instructions may be quick, but it isn’t always effective. Teaching is valuable when employees genuinely need guidance, yet it can demotivate those who already know what to do. This highlights why plays a vital role in employee .

🎯Ultimately, through this , we recognized that while the Balanced Scorecard is a powerful management tool for measuring performance outcomes, leadership and stem from something deeper—daily communication, connection, and coaching that employees to achieve these results.

🎉 Celebrating ' 5th Anniversary

Today marks Memetics’ fifth birthday! Research shows that 95% of startups close within their first five years — so when I founded Memetics People Development in 2021, my plan was simply to give it my all for five solid years.

At the very beginning, I was honored to receive a from someone I deeply respect, Mr. Chua Lam (蔡瀾) — a Chinese calligraphy artwork titled “Creating Something from Nothing” (無中生有). His message reminded me to always keep building from scratch, to turn ideas into something real. Though Mr. Chua has passed away, his and words continue to everything we do.

Five years later, Memetics is still thriving — growing steadily and staying true to that original of creating something from nothing. I’m deeply grateful to all our clients and partners who made this journey possible.

While we’ve achieved our five-year goal, this milestone also marks a new beginning. It’s time once again to create something from nothing — and we’re excited to share some fresh changes coming in Q2. Stay tuned.

Helping Employees Adapt with Positive Emotion in Times of Change

In today’s world of constant disruption, adaptability isn’t just a nice-to-have - it’s a survival skill. The workplace is evolving faster than ever, with shorter skill life cycles and continuous transformation replacing the idea of stability. According to the World Economic Forum, nearly 39% of workers’ core skills will change by 2030. That means one of our key roles as leaders is to help employees reactivate their natural adaptability.

Interestingly, adaptability isn’t something new to us - it’s wired into our psychological system. The challenge isn’t teaching people how to adapt, but rather creating the emotional environment that allows them to adapt more easily. When employees experience positive emotions during change, they become more open, motivated, and resilient. Employees tend to embrace change more readily when their leaders:

1) Read the environment analytically: Anticipate potential disruptions and adjust systems proactively.

2) Show emotional intelligence: Understand how employees feel through change and communicate with empathy.

3) Coach supportively: Use questioning and reflection to grow self-awareness and guide employees from emotion to rational thinking.

4) Nurture a growth mindset: Encourage learning, experimenting, and seeing setbacks as opportunities for growth.

When we help employees experience positive emotions during change, resistance decreases and team resilience grows. Change will always be constant - but with the right mindset and emotional support, our people can thrive through it.

Want Proactive Employees? Start by Changing Your Beliefs about Coaching

In PerformanceCoaching trainings, participants often ask:
“Why do we need to use a questioning, coaching approach with underperforming employees instead of simply telling, instructing, or even punishing them? Coaching seems ineffective and just wastes time.”I usually respond with a question: “Why do you think that way?”Most say, “Because people are not self-aware or proactive - so we must teach them directly.”Then I ask, “What’s your ideal outcome?”They reply, “We want employees to take and even take on extra responsibility.”My is: “What kind of thinking do people who willingly take initiative and responsibility tend to have?”And further: “What must their believe in order to this mindset in their employees?”

Here’s the paradox: we hope our employees act with free will, thought, and initiative, yet when developing them, we assume they lack these very qualities. We rely on methods - then expect autonomy as the result. But as the saying goes, you reap what you sow: if the input denies initiative, the output will never be proactive employees. Coaching, at its core, is built on the belief that every employee already has motivation, initiative, and problem-solving capacity within them. The real question is - are we using the right approach to activate and these qualities?
