🏠 The architecture of the Makarska Riviera tells a dual story, one of resilient mountain shepherds and another of elegant coastal estates.

The structure and design of old complexes, from the Bekavci-Ivandići hamlets in to the Ivičević estates in , were dictated more by necessity and a sense of community than by aesthetics. However, if you stroll around them today, you’ll see just how beautiful they are, long after their primary function has subsided.

Beneath porches with wide arches lay the entrances to the konobas (cellars) 🏺, while heavy stone-plate roofs protected the structure from the force of the wind. Every element served a purpose: cisterns secured the water supply, while wine presses and olive mills transformed manual labor into a means of survival. 🫒

Found today throughout the Riviera, these stone remnants stand as a record of the architectural genius of our ancestors who built entire ecosystems rather than just beautiful homes.💙

From the Adriatic shore to the peak of Sveti Jure: it’s one of the most attractive, (and demanding!), cycling routes in this part of Europe. 🚵‍♀️

Expect a journey of contrasts: from the winding curves to mountain meadows where wild horses roam. And just when you think you’ve made it, the last 4 kilometers hit you with 20% gradients.

The reward? A view from the top that makes every drop of sweat worth it, and a descent that is pure adrenaline.

📍 Start: Makarska beach
📍 Finish: Sveti Jure peak (1762m)
💧 Tip: Carry enough fluids! There’s only one refuel point at the 15th kilometer.

Caution: The Biokovo road is narrow, share it safely.

Summer: Mon–Fri: 9 AM – 3 PM | Sat: 9 AM – 1 PM (Closed on Sundays).
Winter (15.10. – 01.05.): Visits available by prior arrangement.

📍 Veliki Kaštel Interpretation Center (Kotišina): Reopening in May

📍Monasteries (Živogošće, Zaostrog): open daily, and since these are active monasteries, please enjoy them quietly.
