Japanese scientists have developed a groundbreaking drug that could enable people to naturally regrow their missing teeth.

The drug works by targeting and blocking a protein called USAG-1, which normally suppresses the growth of additional teeth. By inhibiting this protein, dormant "third-generation" tooth buds present in the gums are activated, leading to the growth of new, natural teeth.

Animal trials using mice and ferrets have shown promising results, successfully demonstrating the regeneration of teeth. Building on this success, human clinical trials began in October 2024 at Kyoto University Hospital.

The first phase of the trial involves 30 adult men, each missing at least one molar. The drug is administered intravenously, and the participants will be monitored over an 11-month period to assess the treatment's safety and effectiveness.

If the trials prove successful, the next phase will focus on children aged 2 to 7 who have congenital tooth deficiencies (missing some teeth from birth).

Researchers aim to make this drug available to the public by 2030. If fully approved, it could revolutionize dental care by offering a natural alternative to dentures and implants.

However, experts caution that while the results in animals are encouraging, human biology is more complex. It remains important to ensure that the regrown teeth are fully functional, durable, and aesthetically appropriate.

Further research and long-term studies will be essential to validate the success of this new approach.
