Farming is a profession that requires time and proper planning to get the best out of it. It is not a quick money making scheme and can be challenging most times.

Here are 5 things you should know before going into farming whether growing vegetables, raising animals or managing a mixed farm.

đŸŒ± Start small and grow steady
Don’t try to do everything at once. Begin with manageable acreage, a few crops, or a small herd. This way, mistakes become lessons instead of costly failures.

đŸŒ± Know your soil type and climate
The soil is the foundation of everything and testing it early to understand what it needs will help you to determine what to do with it and choose crops or livestock that suits the region’s climate. Healthy soil equates to a healthy harvest.

đŸŒ± Plan before you planting
Farming is as much about planning as it is about planting. Create a simple business plan like what you will grow, who you will sell to and how you will market it. Profitability really matters.

đŸŒ± Build communities and networks
Farming is not successful in isolation. Connect with other farmers, local co-ops, and agricultural extension officers. The best advice often comes from people who have already walked the path.

đŸŒ± Patience and persistence pay off
Farming is a long-term work. Weather, pests, and markets won’t always go your way. Stay flexible, keep learning, and celebrate small wins along the journey.

P.S: Farming isn’t just a business, it’s a lifestyle that feeds people and sustains communities. Let’s farm the future together.

Sometime last week, a farmer from Kenya shared his ordeal on how he almost got deported during his visit to Senegal for the African Food System forum due to improper eating as he was caught eating on the train and ended up paying a fine at the police station.

Little did I know that I will have similar experience but in my situation, it was not a police case for health issues.

When I got to Netherlands, I visited the supermarket to buy a few things then I spotted this good looking custard drink and I was tempted to buy it. One of my inner voices was like "Sarah you don't need this, just buy other stuffs" while the other voice (the wicked voice đŸ€Ł) was like "Girl just grab it, what is the essence of visiting a new country without trying new things"?.

That was how I followed that evil loud voice 😄 and quickly grabbed the drink. On getting home, I first had a little taste of it and it was so nice and friendly to the taste bud then I quickly drank it with no mercy and it eventually had no mercy on me đŸ€ŁđŸ˜đŸ˜‚

Within few minutes, I got sick. I felt bloated with fever and headache with limited movement and I had 24 hours left to be in the country as it was a short visit.

Anyways, I'm back to Hungary, strong and healthy. That not withstanding, I really enjoyed my stay in Netherlands đŸ‡łđŸ‡± and will plan for a second visit with a longer during as there is so much to learn there.

Moral lessons: Don't go eating new things in a new environment especially when you have not accomplished your mission there (I learnt the hard way đŸ€ŁđŸ€ŁđŸ˜‚). What saved me was that I came with some medications as first aid (for emergency).

One of the things I have observed in the Netherlands is the abundance of farmlands. The country is relatively small but still occupies the position of the second largest exporter of agricultural and food products after United States. This shows how intentional they are in their production and the level technology and innovation they utilise in agricultural production.
