The approx. 1.6 km long, beautiful, white sandy beach Oldshoremore Beach - also known as Am Mellan - is one of the most beautiful beaches in Scotland and is located north of Kinlochbervie (County Sutherland) in the north-west of the Scottish Highlands. One of the highlights of this beach is the rocky headland called Eilean na h-Aiteig that separates Oldshoremore Beach from its beach neighbor, Polin Beach. This headland can be reached with dry feet, depending on the water level, with a bit of scrambling over the rocks, which rise out of the beach like huge scales of a primeval reptile. Eilean na h-Aiteig Point offers magnificent views of the coastline and the beaches of Oldshoremore & Polin Beach. What makes Oldshoremore Beach particularly fascinating in my opinion are the eroded, colorful formations of Lewisian gneiss. The cliffs at Oldshoremore Beach, for example, consist of exposed Lewis gneiss, which is often found here in the far north-west of Scotland. The textures and colors of the rocks show how they were twisted under high pressure deep in the earth's crust billions of years ago, creating this striking pattern of black (basaltic) and pink (granite) gneiss. Lewis Gneiss is Britain's oldest rock type and was formed around 3,000 million years ago! Some gneisses, such as here at Oldshoremore, underwent further metamorphism more than 1,000 million years ago and were overlain by bright red-brown Torridonian Sandstone. But not only the rocks, but also the stones lying around at the headland are a colorful feast for the eyes and look more like painted by an artist than "just" completely natural! So a beach to marvel at - in many ways! 😍 Oldshoremore Beach is one of three sandy beaches connected by a five-mile coastal walk - the Oldshoremore Circuit. Note: the approach via Kinlochbervie with all its wonderfully curved lochs and breathtaking mountain views is a highlight in itself!
