New Book: Habsburg Encounters with Native America: Familiar Strangers

This new volume explores centuries of connections between the Habsburg monarchy and Indigenous peoples of the Americas. Instead of focusing on the broader German fascination, it uncovers a more direct and unique story of cultural dialogues, encounters and exchanges that shaped both worlds.

Now Published! Emília Barna’s 'Working in Music on the Semiperiphery' is here

What does it mean to work in music where informality shapes labor, households contribute unseen work and political capital defines opportunities? Drawing on field data from Hungary (2018–2021), Barna maps how musicians and cultural workers navigate precariousness, subsidies and digital platforms.

With a feminist lens, Barna explores how home and workplace blur, how (self-)exploitation emerges, and how semiperipheral contexts reshape the relationship between markets and the state.

Published thanks to Opening the Future, this is essential reading for anyone interested in cultural labour, feminism and the socio-politics of music.

📘 Just published: Women in Romania’s First World War by Alin Ciupală

When Romania entered the First World War in 1916, women from all backgrounds - bourgeois, middle-class, and rural - played crucial roles in shaping the national effort.

Alin Ciupală’s new book explores their wartime contributions, from organising hospitals and supporting civilians to navigating love, s*x and gendered expectations. It includes portraits of figures such as Queen Marie and Ecaterina Teodoroiu, Romania’s only female officer killed in combat.

The book also reflects on postwar realities: despite women’s hopes for full civic recognition, the return to “normal” left many excluded from public life.
