During Russia’s revolutionary year of 1917, Emmeline Pankhurst and her secretary Jessie Kenney, both well-known suffragettes, traveled to Russia to speak with women about suffrage, but also to persuade Russia to remain in the war. Throughout their travels and meetings, Kenney kept a diary. This volume introduces Kenney’s Russian diary to a general audience with insights from editor Lee Farrow, offering a new perspective on the Russian Revolution and a window into this unique chapter of the British suffrage movement.

Krisztián Csaplár-Degovics will be presenting his new book Empire-Building and Nation-Building in Central Europe: Zoltán László (1881–1961) in the Turmoil of the 20th Century. We welcome all participants of the History Fest conference in Sarajevo to join him tomorrow, June 3, at 9:50 am.

Csaplár-Degovics’s study explores how the life of this member of the middle-class intelligentsia reflects broader ideological and political transformations in East-Central Europe during the period.

As a collective, klaverjas players form a distinct community of practice with a unique organizational discourse, language, and set of socialization practices, and the history of the game is part of the unmapped sporting heritage of South Africa’s Black communities. This study traces the development of klaverjas within its social context and places competitive klaverjas in the mainstream of South African sports history.

New book: 𝘿𝙚𝙘𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙧𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙍𝙖𝙘𝙚: 𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙋𝙤𝙡𝙞𝙩𝙞𝙘𝙨 𝙤𝙛 𝙒𝙚𝙡𝙘𝙤𝙢𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙐𝙠𝙧𝙖𝙞𝙣𝙞𝙖𝙣𝙨 𝙞𝙣 𝙍𝙤𝙢𝙖𝙣𝙞𝙖 by Raluca Bejan

When Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022 and people began to flee the country, the hospitality of neighboring countries toward Ukrainians was set in stark contrast to their reluctance to accommodate refugees from Africa and the Middle East. Using Romania as a case study, and drawing on a wide range of interviews, Decentring Race complicates the story that singles out race as the primary factor in the categorization of refugees as either “deserving” or “undeserving.”

Visited by violence and wars, border changes and political instability, authoritarian regimes and ethnic conflict, East-Central Europe in the twentieth century seemed an unlikely place of protection for refugees.
