The Mongol invasion of Hungary in 1241–42 was one of the most important returning points
in Hungarian history. The Great Western Campaign of Mongol expansion, of which the
invasion of Hungary was a crucial element in the history of medieval Europe, affected large
parts of Rus’, Poland, Moravia, the Dalmatian coastline, and the Balkans. However, after
the military success in major battles and the conquest of vast areas, the Mongol army
unexpectedly withdrew from Hungary. This sudden change in their military expansion
presents a dilemma for historical studies.
The present volume offers the most complex and detailed interpretation of the entire
period by revisiting all the major questions connected to this historical puzzle. Stephen
Pow had to analyze chronicles, artifacts, buildings, and archaeological findings from
diverse regions while also examining the interactions between different cultures and power
centers. The resulting book combines detailed analytical studies of medieval historical
sources with a critical re-evaluation of existing scholarly literature while offering innovative
interpretations of material evidence through complex and comparative approaches on a
Eurasian scale.
